Why do so many people not understand how to play a shooter?

Again, there's team deathmatch if you just want to kill. How many times do I have to say this?
Then let me add another possible reason:

g) They want to kill players, but TDM and DM servers are always empty.

Let's face it- TDM gamemodes are some of the least-played modes in this day and age. I'd say that's not so much because people don't want to play it, but because players tend to gravitate towards whatever mode/game has the most players in it. Sad, but true.

I don't quit any of my games (unless I'm facing glitchers or playing with glitchers), I want my stats to accurately show the type of player I am, I don't boost anything.
Well that's good to hear. You're not letting it get to you too much.

Sniping is perhaps the hardest role to play (skill-wise and positioning-wise), not the most basic or easiest at all. A bad sniper hurts a team more than a bad player running in with an assault rifle or SMG. If you don't know the map, you're not going to learn it by not seeing the majority of it.
Hey- tell it to the snipers. I'd disagree to an extent about sniper difficulty though. If you've seen someone else demonstrate a good position, getting there requires almost no skill. Once there you can basically play one-handed. You might have to account for ping/bullet drop/travel time depending on the game, but in the end it's still just point and click. Not like the other roles that require actual movement, assuming the sniper isn't planning to relocate at all.

If you care about winning why would you play public? I for one play for fun.
My team generally hates me for it but I spend half my games with a riot shield only and prone crawling around the entire map going for a single kill.

I would prefer to rush in and get fun kills but lose rather than camp and go 30-0 and win. I don't really care what my team thinks. They can find people who want to be serious themselves, your fun is not my responsibility.
I would so teamkill you.
And I would probably laugh at how irrationally mad people get over stuff like that.
I don't do it because I'm mad, I do it in hopes you'll get the message to stop camping or then at least leave if you keep getting teamkilled and another player will take your spot.
You do realize I said I don't camp right? I just use rather stupid but fun tactics.

People just have no concept of the most basic tactics whatsoever.
Sooo... you're raging at people who aren't familiar with the game because... they're unfamiliar with the game?

You're just going to have to realise that people aren't born with the innate ability to play modern shooters, and learn to deal with it. Honestly, this thread is silly enough. I'm out.

The only team-based game I play is TF2 as Medic.

I'm really fucking good at it. I know how to pick different Mediguns for different situations, as well as coordinating with fellow Medics, I don't value my own life any further than 'I heal for zero when I'm dead', I rush in and keep as many people alive as possible, and I know how to use my Needlgun and Saw to defend myself.

I use the Saw that has an AOE heal with the taunt because it's very efficient to use in a defensive or when I have a moment's pause during a push, I use the Blutsauger for its efficient self-healing (anyone who uses the crossbow is a moron), and I genuinely enjoy the class.

I don't play to win, that's everyone else's responsibility. My job is to keep them alive so they can do that, and I'm happy being a support role to the war effort.
Gimme a TF2 medic high-five man!

Nothing more satisfying than simultaneously keeping 5 guys alive with a uber quick-fix, and when the uber runs out, you swirl around and kritz-melee a disguised oppo spy who's just about to backstab your heavy.

Ah, sweet victory man, sweet victory. We should team up sometime, and be like Batman and Robin medics..... I'd be happy to be Robin....

Ps quick-fix is underrated

Wait, I thought you said that's what people were supposed to do?

Every shooter is basically played the same way. You RUSH out, gain map control, and camp. You don't camp your own spawn. I don't care if it's your 1st match for a particular shooter, you do the same thing you did in the previous shooter you played. If you just want to kill, there's team deathmatch and deathmatch.
So people are supposed to camp, but you're trying to discourage camping?

I'M SO CONFUSED! XD

I know some of your frustrations even though I play more in the MMO space. And yes I sit behind the objective so I can laugh when they fall into our trap. It totally depends on said objective and the surrounding environment on where you want to be though.

Anyways, you do take it too seriously, it pissed you off enough that you started a thread here to complain about people who's play style/experience does not agree with your own. Have I gotten pissed at my teams performance? Yep, know what I do about it? I say Fuckall and go have some fun fucking with people like you =D at that point winning isn't the point, do you get my point?

These games are to be played to have fun, if you are not having fun then you need a new experience.

And camping? = Not fun, people get bored, sure I've been holding this objective for most of the game, but huh... look at the mini map, everyone's over there... (5 more minutes goes by) goddammit this sucks I have not had anyone to fight no one is heading this way, I'm heading to the action to go have some FUN. Even if holding this point will ensure victory, and sure as shit the second I take off some clown shoe will go and take it. Then the leet folk will shout why the fuck are you all at mid!? Because mid is fun!

I will also blame lack of any play ability on those parents that are getting their little tykes games they should not be playing.

I'm too old for this shit comes to mind. (I'm only 34) I have a buddy that's more into FPS's and when he does not mute all, wholly hell its an ocean of pre-teens screaming obscenities. Its no wonder they don't have situational awareness, they don't even know where their balls are yet.

Oh and yeah DukeNukem for the FPS win, I remember lugging my tower and monitor over to a friends place to have lan matches, ahh what fun.

NEEDS MORE TRIPMINES!

Ubermensche Medics of the world, UNITE! Medic is one of my most played classes in TF2 (Scout, Pyro, and sometimes Sniper are my others), and its the one class I can fish almost any game out of the toilet by switching to. Likewise in Planetside 2 or the Battlefield series where I can alternate from rifleman ass whooping mode and keeping my team alive.

Pro tip to Pheonixmgs here: if your team sucks nuts, go medic, find the guy who's actually doing something useful, and follow him around trying to help. The other zerglings will also pitch in and be your minions because people generally like getting healed and will follow the magic green number dispenser, and if they are being stupid and not following the team's push, they are not your problem anyways and will likely die.

Well you were very careful to not mention the game but you are clearly describing Call of Duty MP, a game designed around rewarding experience to egoistical scoring and gives nothing for team play... have a guess why people don't team up then.

There's still plenty of people playing TDM in MoH Warfighter when there's only like 3,000 people online at any one time.

Crawling might as well be camping, you're moving at like a foot per second. Some people do that in MoH Warfighter and a clanmate will point one out to everyone and we'll all laugh ("does he think we don't see him" lol) and then kill him.

People that get intense about game objectives are boring. I miss the good old days of running around the map in circles shooting people midair with a railgun. Now it's all objectives and realism and why can't we just shoot each other and have fun instead of sitting in the same spot waiting.

OH PLEASE.

Don't even start.
If anyone, ever, says a shooter using a controller has no aim assist, they're either lying or ignorant.
It's impossible.
IMPOSSIBLE.

Google it.
Every CoD since at least Black Ops has given you the option to turn it off. And ya know what? Most games aren't that insane without aim assist. In Battlefield 3 I've actually kept it off. I've even held my own in TF2 whilst playing with an Xbox controller on the PC.

It's not impossible. Hell, in some cases it's even preferential.

You Google it.

I am literally crawling through the center of the map with a riot shield on my back trying to crawl into people legs. If anyone gets killed by that they deserve to be killed. It is pretty much the exact opposite of camping.

It's not just a problem in FPS games. The same applies to mass pvp in rpg's. Kills are the first objective, actual objectives are secondary. That's how most players play in such games. It's stupid, I agree. And I can't figure out why they do it. Which is why I wish I could do more premade matches with friends or clan/guild members so we can use some actual tactics.
They do it because they'll get more xp, or points or whatever from killing people than capturing the objectives or whatever in the majority of online games.

The reason I play objective-based modes is to get away from campers or at least make their strategy turn into a losing one. If you have some lame guy camping a building away from an objective, I just don't go in that building or wait for him to come out since he can't win by sitting there. Or if there's a sniper camping their own spawn, I just don't go in his sightline. But in a deathmatch mode, that's a legit and effective strategy. I don't play shooters to sit in corner or kill people that sit in corners. I play to run around and have fun, and objective modes reward the rushers and punish the campers.

Maybe I've only played the ones where it's about who shoots first. Also, inexperience. Everyone's inexperienced at some point.

I also have a mental disorder. It takes like 10 times as long for me to learn shit. I am better at FPS games than I was 10 years ago, mind you. Just not multiplayer, because I have only a little experience in it.

I'm not really an FPS player though. So that's probably the main thing.

I'll rather have fun that play seriously, to be honest. Map control and all that sounds good and all, but I'd enjoy finding an enemy sniper, sitting on his head and waving my baseball bat around until one of my team's snipers find us, or until i get tired and start to try taunkilling the bugger. Sniping is difficult, and i'm mostly pretty bad at it, but i like to try it out every once in a while, as well. Why? Cause it's different. And i like different stuff every once in a while. I'll fail pretty badly, but it's still fun.

Understand that different people play games for different reasons. There are people who play Rock Band/Guitar Hero/DDR songs obsessively to get the best score on the hardest difficulty and people who play a variety of songs on a low difficulty for a bit of casual fun. There are people who min/max RPGs, finding the optimum gear, strategies to clear the game, others who grind to the point of completely destroying the game's content in a short period. There are people who play games not for the competitive aspect, but for sheer unrefined "fun" and that word is subjective. Everyone's definition of fun is different and if they don't want to play for a victory every game (not everyone does) and don't want to camp an objective, they don't have to. It's not that these people are bad at the game, it's that they're approaching it with an attitude geared towards their definition of fun and not treating the game as a skill that must be practised.

I had to turn off aim assist in Battlefield 3 on 360 as it kept fucking with my aiming. Seriously it will stick to the asshole's face when I needed to lead my shots and it was getting really annoying. Yeah aiming isn't nearly as good with a controller as it is with a mouse, but it is still possible without aim assist being on.
