Why do they even make these...

I was goofing around on the internet (not porn) and I kept seeing these stupid "SEND THIS MESSAGE TO SEE THE LOVE OF YOUR LIFE...." posts all over. Then I got to thinking. Who makes this? Who benefits from making these things? Who sits down the at computer and says "Hey, I'm gonna get somebody to believe something good will happen because I spread this." It's not even like it's advertisements, It's just nonsense. Why?

Another example: I was watching a music video and I went to the comment board and someone went and said that particular band sucks. He wasn't a troll, and everyone was AGREEING with him. Why, would you go, look up a band you hate, (and give them another hit I might add, making them more popular.) and then talk crap about it. That's like going to a movie you hated watching, and then going and paying to watch again to tell the people afterward it sucked. If you wanted to hate on the band, hate it where people DON'T like it.

I guess the point of the thread is to ask, what befuddles you most about the internet?

People like to see that they've had an effect. So when they make these things and a month later they see a site plastered with the messages completely they feel accomplishment in having affected people.

Probably that comment board example, there's just no point.

And I think the "Send this message" crap evolved from chain letters and through chain e-mails. I remember the old Blue Peter chain letters where they tried to see how many people recieved and shit. Any I found were burnt.

It's probably people altering the already idiotic chain e-mails to suit a new medium of communication, gullible idiots being tricked by someone who was probably stoned when they wrote it.

Martins right. People want to think they're important and have some power in the world. Feeling like a helpless ant drone of a multi million population colony makes them feel incredibly insignificant.

Chain messages really confuse the crap out of me. YouTube was plagued with them all summer, mostly that one where you have to do these commands then send the message to five other videos. What confused me the most was the sheer number of people who actually believed it. I actually remember someone say, 'I accidentally read this sorry I'm scared!' and posted a chain message that said 'post this on ten other videos or you'll die.'

Some Internet trends, like Bob on YouTube (where you make an ASCII stick figure >.<) confused me.

But, I think my #1 thing I never understood was the popularity of Fred. Speed your voice up, say random crap, and he has over a million subsribers.

I hate sites where everyone is of one unanimous opinion. Like political websites.
And I hate all the freaking shit on Youtube that everyone wants me to see.

Although, its cool to be the only person among the Escapist's against most of Valve's games.

Thats not TRUE!!!!!!!
*proceeds to cancel his credit card at lighting speed*

I think the entire money making internet philosophy is "sucker born every minute". I've seen some people who are on the internet, it really would not surprize me if some of them are that stupid. Or just smart enough to use their mothers credit card on something they think is real.

The thing I love the most about them ones is when you can clearly see they aren't the same person or are when they are photo-shopped.

At least the Evony ads seem to be dying down a bit.
