In Final fantasy and turn based RPG's why do they stand in a line?

Heres my assumption

So that they cannot possibly friendly-fire each other unless the enemy goes to nearly 90 degrees round from the direction they are facing, it just makes sense

I guess it's supposed to show that the team is together, fully united and strong. Maybe they want to look threatening towards the enemy?

It was the best way to show you vs. them but it's one of those ideas that started out as a convenient mechanic that became expected. Would it be a JRPG if they didn't line up and take turns?

According to the Nostalgia Critic, standing in a line just makes a group look more united and more badass

All JRPG universes are more obsessed with politeness than their country of origin. Every character that battles is just being courteous.
You know, until a cutscene comes along and they regain control of their minds.

It makes sense. You wouldn't want to be the first one in a row of warriors and spellcasters, when they'll just rush forward and attack.
