the title is obvious why do they?
because threads that are about something normal die out in..about a week
while more interesting threads stay a little bit longer.. example "i got muged" (not real i don't think) and (no offence) threads about say some guy drowning a box of kittens stays up for a long time...why? (note i am pretty new with treads and what not)
also i say this one wont last till the end of this weekend :)

Threads that are unique tend to stay longer because people haven't expressed their opinions in them five-dozen times already.

Less than that I'd say, most threads stay alive for about a day.

And it's because no one wants the thread to stay alive, they post and then move on to the next one unless the older thread was good for conversation or they found it really, really interesting. It's what gives (or well, used to give) the Escapist a lot of its variety, that is as long as people used the search bar.

I assume most members (including me) use the hot threads/latest posts bar instead of actually browsing the forums, so if a discussion dies down overnight there won't be much left of it in the morning, and the rest of the conversation will last until people stop quoting each other.

It's kind of hard to feel wanted at the Escapist sometimes. I have 4 guys on my friends list, and I have over 1k posts. I only know one well and one ok-ish. On other forums, by the time I had 1k posts I had at least 20 friends. This probably contributes to people not giving a crap and not continuing to talk in a thread after their first post.

Most threads simply aren't a type of topic for a discussion to last that long.

Its because unless there is a reason for a person to come back to the threadm tehy post and move on. If you want your tghread to survive, you need lots of quotes and good discussion value. Or be a game. RP threads last forever, if they're good.

Because there are a lot of users. It tends to be a rule of thumb that on smaller boards, threads will last a lot longer. Plus since we're not such a small and tight knit community, we don't tend to value each others opinions quite as highly unless the random event they are posting about happens to hit very close to home.

Interesting topics will have lots of new feedback. Everyone will have an opinion, but more normal threads get 5-15 people who have a brief exchange of ideas then move on.

Or if they get horribly off topic. Either way.
This is ture. But my current main RP, is on page 89 I think, and we just kinda freeform it. Its been that way from the beginning, it actually works pretty damned well. The GM is at Colledge all the time, so we just make up the story on our own. Its fun.

For the most part it because most threads dont really have anything thing worth revisiting and there for not worth posting in multiple times.

Obviously its the more conraversal threads (is it ethical to slaughth blind orphened nuns with out giving them pain killers first) that last much longer than on the one about commparativly bland topics (Which is better? dark or german chocolate).

If a thread is to survive it need to being something that people feel strongly about and will deffend with feral energy. Its just like the evening news, contraversy gets rating.

Many threads are created that appeal to broader groups, permit larger generalizations, or otherwise gain the attention due to having a subject du jour that many users would enjoy common parlance. Many threads that have more specific or narrower directives are ignored by many users as either not being pertinent to their interests or otherwise not worth their time or attention. For this reason if I made a thread about SourceSDK , it would probably find itself buried into page 5 before another user saw the Gaming discussion that also was interested in SourceSDK. Even assuming that this other rare user shares this common interest, it will depend on how carefully worded and considered that the thread was made if they even will post anything. If their post was so sufficient in opinionation or fact, it may even be possible that the next user to spot it may not feel they have anything to add, so they don't.

A couple years ago this didn't happen because new threads were not all that common, and people held lengthy discussions on existing threads because they already were there. New pages took days to occur, and now the First page is entirely replenished in less than 5 hours.

I beg to differ. There are a great many topics that can be discussed at length. However, the challenge lies in people being interested in such topics.
Many people incorrectly assume that the best way to generate such a topic regards either controversy or sex, or both. While lengthy topics and sex/controversy aren't mutually exclusive, they are usually given more attention than they rationally deserve because regardless how intelligent the average Escapist user is, the average Escapist user is subject and victim (for lack of a better word) of the Escapist and many other sources' Marketing machines.

A proper flame war can keep the thread living seriously long... So you never know.
