Inspired by a recently locked thread, I started thinking why we choose to remember certain people on these boards who, in a way, always "had it comin'" to them. Why do people insist on thinking so highly of them? Maybe its just me, but do people really need to look up to others, even on an internet forum? I guess I'm just a little cranky and tired right now, but...thoughts?

Hm, Max?

Keep in mind it's not necissarily 'looking up to', some people are just a personality and can be interesting as a person. That, what you said, and the fact that it's cool to know that regular dude that always hangs out there.

It's all just in the spirit of fun. We don't really think of these people as true royalty on the site.

I find it vaguely irritating, and at first it made me detest those who are the objects of people's adulation. After a while, though, having gotten to know a few people, I know that it was a bit stupid of me to despise people simply for being excessively popular.

I do, however, continue to feel quite scornful of anyone who latches onto these people in the hopes of becoming popular themselves.
Said it for me.

Hmm... yeah, I better not say anything.

Anyway, I guess every society needs it's heroes and leaders, although many times why some people are considered so I completely fail to comprehend.

Yeah, it's all fun really, it's not like we're treating them like kings and queens and brown nosing them.

No i think he was reffering to someone a little more australian.

Well we are in a social community setting, a hierarchy of some kind or another was bound to come up. I guess every tribe needs its leaders or in this case every forum needs its most prolific. Its just human nature really.

This. Humans are social creatures.

I thought this post was going to be about history itself. Aw.

Everyone deserves recognition, even if it is for sitting on an internet forum 24 hours a day, right? Although real life recognition would probably feel much better.

Please do. I hope you are not implying that I myself am guilty of the same as those I scorn.
Girl, say wha?

No, don't worry, I was not referring to you, other people.

I don't see what the problem is. People always look up to those who have something better than them. Like a car, a house, even something like recognition. People even looked up to Hitler once upon a time

As much as we would like to not remember them, it isn't possible to ignore them. Whilst they were very dark times, we must accept that they still influenced the world around us and have changed the world as much as any other event in history, and thus they are a part of our history we can't just remove from the records and ignore.
