I think we fight because force is the only way to impose yourself over someone else, and equally stop people from imposing themselves upon you. Conflict breeds conflict and sadly until we get much further along we wont change.

Why would I fight? To protect myself and those I care about.

I have to agree with everyone that has taken martial arts. There is something about going head to head with someone that really gets you pumped. I haven't been in a fight since college (knock on wood) and really would like to never be in one again. I always feel bad after I hurt someone, even if they deserved it.

On another note, I think society is too lenient. I think some people need to get their ass handed to them to teach a lesson. People say violence doesn't solve anything, but if I got punched in the face for saying something stupid when I was growing up, I learned really fast.

Truer words were never spoken. Some people can't be reasoned with. The only thing they understand is force.

Frankly, some very good points made so far. Nature is violent. Humans are part of nature. As Werner Herzog said about jungles: "I am in awe of it, but I do not love it. It's ugly. It is a perfect symphony of mass murder."
Yep, war's hell. But it looks stonking great.

I can only imagine that it is the externalization of genetic dominance. Hence why ethnocentricites and racism are so prevelant in these matters.

Because deep down we believe the people that are not like us don't deserve the privilege of living on the same planet as we do.

Animals don't fight for the sake of fighting, usually there is a reason behind it like territory, protecting young, or hunger.

Humans fight for pathetic reasons, fighting to cause another suffering and pain; basically fighting for the sake of fighting.

'Cos we're Animals. There will always be War as long their are different Nationalities, races and sizes of nose. It's just like that.
Even if everyone was the same a group of vigilantes would go out of their way to look different and THEN we'd get another war.

We fight, both by the extremely literal and more liberal definitions, because competition makes us better. Being nice never advanced your genetic material/species.
Not true, actually. In a hunter/gatherer society (which is how we've actually been for most of our tenure in this world as humans), co-operation and mutual support are essential for survival. Even a single psychopath (or if you prefer, sociopath) can wipe out a whole tribe's gene pool. Tribes that work together and support their own tend to endure. As a result, nature selects for altruism.

This changes with the advent of agrarian civilization and the development of cities. Suddenly, a profitable niche opens up for parasites, and psychopaths can breed very successfully.

The reasons for fighting are as numerous as the actual fights. And in truth, they're not important. The consequences are what's important. In the end, it doesn't matter why you fought and killed someone, because they're equally dead no matter what your reasons.

I disagree with that last paragraph. Let's say that you're in a fight in which the only way to defend yourself or some one you care about is to kill your attacker. That seems remarkably different from some one who simply attacks and kills some one just because they can.

And yet they're both equally dead.
In both cases, there are consequences for not killing, as well as for killing. If you don't kill in the first instance then (presumably), you will die. If you do kill, that has consequences as well. It is the consequences that matter, not the intention.
