Why do we obsess over Slender Man so much?

I don't obsess. In fact, I'm sick of hearing about it period. The community has literally turned me off of ANYTHING slender man related because they just won't stop talking about.

The community? As in here on the Escapist, or just in general?

Because this is really only the second thread I've seen on the topic.

It's not scary, it's fucking lame. You what is scary? Context. A story that's believable enough, with people I care about in grave danger, Copypasta need not apply.

I feel sorry for you. What's it like living life with absolutely no imagination of your own? Always having to rely on outside sources to make you feel or think things, must be TERRIBLE.

I must admit, Slendy got to me for about a week or so. I refused to look at the tree out of my window at night for that reason.

It's a perfectly told horror story. Vague enough to have that fear of the unknown but with a human enough appearance to put it in the uncanny valley that automatically gives a feeling of unease. Throw in some spooky stories and you have nightmare fuel.

OT: He's only scary if you actually immerse yourself in the mythos of it. Everything about him is designed to freak you out, really subtely. He's semi human, but something's very, very wrong. He can't be killed, no one can ever fight him and the more you think of him the worse it gets. It's the paranoia of knowing something unstoppable is somewhere around you skulking around in the trees, but you can't even think of him because it'll get even worse.

If you actually immerse yourself in it, it's pretty much perfect paranoia fuel. If you don't, it's just a dumb guy with long limbs.

Completely fantastical boogeymen are not scary in the least, and as this "Slender Man" is admitted as such. Why would anyone aside from small children find it scary? What am I missing?

Apart from the vast amout of other perfectly good reasons here - Briefly speaking Slenderman is the perfect tension building character. Think about it - You never actually see him do anything. You don't see him kill anyone, you rarely even see him moving. He just stands there, and that's what makes him scary - your imagination, encouraged by the lack of information on him, filling the blank slate that he leaves behind. It does all the work for him.

A very well made horror character indeed.

Micheal Myers do this cause is f*cking evil [like most of us say], and he like stab peoples....cause he is evil [yeah...no so good story for Micheal]. He go slow and just find creativive ways [or not] to kill his victims.

Slenderman....oh boy Slenderman is a lot of things, but I have have to describe him with one word is "Puppeteer".
Nearly all of his abilities is how he manipulate all his victims with many different ways:

-He can make only visible his presents to the one he want, and not to the others.
-He can take the appearance of another human being so he can the other trust him and in the end either Slenderman kill him or advice to do something that serves his plans.
-He can brainwatch control some peoples and make them his servants, the well known Proxies, and do his dirty work if Slenderman don't want to get invovled.
-He can take direct control a a person if Slenderman do mor easier his job.
-He have the abilty of Time travel. He can litterally bend time and space and teleport himself everywhere he like. And here also is the good part: Because he can manipulate tima and space, He can be in many places in the same time!!!!!

So yeah, if he were to be able to do all that, sure.
But from the Marble Hornet stuff I have only ever seen him standing there, and appearing.

And the evil argument.
I think they are both very evil.
Slender man just has a more distinguished factor.

You see, the main reason he stalks people is so that he can get 20 dollars for drycleqning his suit. Other than that he's a pretty nice guy, he has an office job and a loving family.

I watched maybe 3/4 of the Marble Hornets series, at night as well, and I found it to be funny. SHAKY CAMERA. OH NO I TOOK THE PILLS? WHAT DO THEY DO. OH GOD KEEP THE CAMERA ON ALWAYS. So over the top over something that had shown no signs of being actually dangerous.

Then again I stopped being afraid of the dark when I was a kid. As my dad always said, "The night is your friend, it means they won't see you coming."

Yes, they are both evil, but one of the theories said that Slenderman is eivl cause......He is EVIL himself!!! He is literaly the gather of evil energy around the world and created this persona.
Also one other theory is Slenderman most of the times target only people they had a terrible tragety in the past. He is feed with the misery and fear of the others. He need this "aura" from teh other to cut his hunger. Also Slenderman was a legend from the early years of the humanity.
He first "know" appearance was in German in Medieval days.

Probably down the almost machine like way he goes about his business. He doesn't seem to have a personal motive. Also, he's pretty new to the horror scene! Actually, I think he's the first decent monster to hit horror in a long time. We're just getting used to him! Adding to his mythology, etc. We're able to add on real fears that apply to us now, unlike with vampires and werewolves. I honestly encourage people to come up with newer monsters like this! Fucking vampires are getting old. Real old. And sparkly. Maybe the sparkling is like a form of pop culture decay or something!
