Why do we even bother to voice our opinions to a random group of strangers whom we are virtually certain to never meet in real life?

Humans have a need for socialization.

Forums are easier than actual talking; you don't even need an interlocular, really. Its just the idea that others may, at some point, read the thread, that makes posting more satisfying than just talking to oneself.

It's a timekiller.

Why do we bother to read retarded news articles about celebrities?

It's a timekiller.

Share and spread ideas/thoughts/beliefs/etc. Also I like to think we're all a little egotistical.

because making your opinion heard feels good, whether anybody reads it or not

unless its a youtube comment, 99% of the time, they are worth nothing

To be heard in a decent place ?
Rather than being slated for own beliefs, also to widen our views by hearing other peoples opinions :)

Talking to random strangers online fills up a lot of the free time I have due to my sleeping patterns.

That's my reason, but I doubt many people on here share it.
I bet your "sleeping patterns" are caused by an internet addiction. I see it happen all the time...

A little?

The Escapist might just be the most egotistical forum I've ever seen.

That's not necessarily a bad thing, though.

Tell that to the people attending UK Escapism.

And because you, as human beings, want people to agree with you.
You want to talk about yourselves and be complimented.

I do it for shits and giggles, mostly.
We'll get there one day...

Personally I'm just really, really, REALLY bored and it's something to do at 4 in the morning when you're too lazy to go sleep.

Because we really feel better in our choice between Halo 3, Gears of War 2 and Fallout 3 after asking here.

Because this 'random group of people' are all awesome and I enjoy posting my thoughts.

Also, because The Escapist is awesome.

^That is why we post.

Because talking bollocks on forums is far more worthy than reading fucking HEAT.
Sometimes the Mrs. wants to watch her asinine shit on the TV, so anything's better than Holby Fucking City.

Cos it's the new way of socialising.
Hey at least we're not out on the streets dealing drugs to 9 year olds and beating up old ladies.

To take a quote a bit out of context, this.
I'm bored most of the day, and I've found a group of people who are fun to talk with, and won't just get shocked and leave if I talk about eating babies and whatnot.
