i do it to give my oppinion in a subject, even if no one reads it, i feel like i am contributing to something I wanted to contribute.

For me personally, it's a chance to socialize outside of my normal circle. I spend 10-14 hours a day with other cooks and people who work in my industry. We spend a good amount of time talking about cooking, our scars, places we've worked. Basically shop talk. There are a couple guys I work with that I can talk to about other subjects, but sometimes I like to post on forums, mainly only on the Escapist, if only to get away from that and hear what other people think about damn near anything under the sun. I've grown a connection to a few people here. Even if I never meet them face-to-face, (or already have and don't know it)I know them here. They're fun to chat with, and I even find myself wondering how they're doing. Recently, someone broke up with their significant other and seemed bummed out, so chatting through threads is a way for me to tell that person, hey, you ain't alone bud. Plus, some people here have a wit and intelligence different from people I know in my day to day life. I could probably go on, but that's enough for now.

To talk to people about subjects that I rarely get to bring up in real life. I have very few in-depth conversations about videogames, comics, sci-fi/fantasy books and all my other nerdy habits in real life, any conversation just being prolonged through politeness. This site gives me the chance to discuss all these things with people who share these interests.

Boredom, interest in speaking with others, the like and/or need to share one's opinion with people likely to actually understand what one is talking about and in a location where most topics you like will be discussed...
