The dictionary definition for escapism is: the tendency to seek distraction and relief from unpleasant realities, esp. by seeking entertainment or engaging in fantasy

So, I guess that my question is this:

Why do you come to the Escapist, or why do you escape?

I need a place away from the tambourine monkey in my head. I do so by posting.

Because my life sucks.

Believe me, I'm not being emo or anything, I've actually had a very, very shitty life (which I've even told one Escapist, but which I won't reveal here), and even though my social relations are fine, any time not spent with my friends and/or people I genuinely enjoy spending time with, playing games, watching movies (or anything related), posting on forums and surfing the web etc. etc. I'd rather minimize as much as possible.

I guess being with friends is escapism too.

Why do I "escape"? Why the fuck wouldn't I? What else would I do with my life if I didn't "seek entertainment or engage in fantasy"? I'd go crazy.

why do i escape, cause i got nothing better to do during most of my nights (hate clubbing, my mates don't :'(). I do however have an active imagination and have many different fantasies i can conjure up. also i find it impossible to sleep thus why i escape to the net, as its only a matter of time at looking at 4chan until i enter a comatose state.

Homework. Reality.
If I want to immerse myself in a gaming community, I come here. At my school, there's not a really enthusiastic gaming community, and the few that do have xbox live or with similiar interests in gaming are all jerks - so any chance of playing multiplayer I forfeit without a second glance. Here, however, I can speak or listen about gaming with people who know what they're talking about and that are generally not going to burn me to cinders. And if you are jerks then, hey, I can ignore you ;)

Mostly because when (as I am now) I'm back home I live in a village with circa 500 people most of whom are about 70+ years old and I have no transport to get around to see my old friends; I have very little to do. Before I left England I spent heaps of time here but when I'm back in NZ my posts will become virtually zero as I have a lot of friends close to hand, I have a full time job, I can get about as I have a car and also I have no net there. I like the site a lot, there's plenty of interesting topics, good RP's and of course ZP is something I used to watch every week. For me it's a way to kill time when I can't be bothered to sus a lift to play cricket or I really don't want to play any of the games I own. I wouldn't call it "escapism" per se, more just a time-sink where I can practice my typing skills and see what the latest news in the gaming world is.

If I ever want to talk about gaming I'd come here. My school friends are not very open minded on it (CoD is da best. CoD Black opps looks awesome dood, crossbow = awesome blah blah blah etc etc)

Also just to talk, there always something different in the forums.

I probably come closer to escapism than most people. I play games because they distract me from my endless worry-filled, doubtful, misanthropic thinking. I find that I can only be happy when distracted.

EDIT: And other times I'm just bored.

Same. Alot of my friends are "Gamers" whose gaming conversation consists of " Dood i just got my AA12 and raffica extended mags dood i love modern warfare 2 its sick" Mind you none of them have Xbox live, so they base that off of single player and split screen.

I also like to come here, because you can talk about basically anything, and everyone listens to what you have to say.

The only reason I'm here is to chat with an irl friend of mine who refuses to use MSN or any other form of communication on the internet, because he thinks only idiots and mainstream posers use it (his words, not mine), lol.

I do post occasionally, though.

I have a direct link to my profile and never visit the front page. :D
Frankly, I find most of the content the site has to offer, including the aussie on meth, as entertaining as smashing my testicles with a hammer.

It's too tame, strict and boring here.
It's like the users have been lobotomized.
