Because life sucks.
Fixed.

No matter who you are or how awesome you think your life is, life sucks. Period. Either you have no money or you have no conscious.

I'm going to have to drag myself through two more miserable, lonely years of high school, go to college, likely be even more miserable there, then get a shitty job and probably be miserable there, too.

But, then again, I'm a teenager, so the angst and the depression and the like is... Probably natural.
Yeah. The definition of "escapism" is "an inclination to retreat from unpleasant activities through diversion of X and Y and Z et cetera".

Think about it. "escapism" is trying to retreat from unpleasant activities. Everything you do that is pleasant is technically escapism, not just videogames, books, movies and everything else that pulls you away from socialization.

Why do people escape? Well, otherwise their lives would be full of "unpleasant activities", and it'd be horrible.

Also, yeah, it doesn't matter how good a life someone has, because most of that is probably achieved because of escapism, most of "good life" derives from committed escapism and so on.

Why do I indulge in escapism? because the fantasies and challenges of computer games are more engaging and interesting than anything in RL (that I can afford).

a quick half-wise quote kind of about this:

"life is like a box of chocolates, too much and you get sick."
