Well, I've had Mordin Solus as an avatar since I joined the forums. As for why? Honestly, because I don't see any reason to change it, and I think it suits my intended forum persona well enough. It might have to do with file size and shape of the gif. Like I Haven't been able to get gifs to run unless they're very small file size, and a perfect square, and to begin with there's no image compression. So you actually have to shrink it down to equal or less than the parameters stated.

Also, I can see a moving head in your avatar pic. Early-mid 30s Caucasian with chestnut head and facial hair. If that's your selected avatar, then it's working.

If you're anything like me my avatar doesn't show up in my profile. Just the faceless person with cap.

Back in 2013 I was hanging out in a twitch stream where for a charity event a bunch of developers were participating in a game jam. The charity was to provide monetary aid for the Ebola outbreak that was in the news, so the developers had chosen a theme of healing in their titles. The stream in question I was watching had a theme where your avatar would battle diseases interpreted as bullet hell stages.

Some hours into it the developer announced that he needed "funny diseases" to heal as part of the game's lore. I contributed with a whole bunch of silly jokes as part of this, and many of these got into the game, after being interpreted through the developer's sensibilities.

Eventually the game was released, and since I had contributed some to it and I had no avatar and I thought it was a good, fun and wholesome game, I chose to use it as an avatar.

The game in question is Princess Remedy in a World of Hurt. It's currently one of the top 100 ranked games on steam, though the fact that it's free probably contributes a whole bunch to those numbers.

EDIT: I double checked. It's the 132:nd highest ranked game on steam. Sorry for an honest mistake.

Mine is from the cartoon "Wild Kratts" (haven't seen much of it, even though I was a huge fan of "Kratt's Creatures" back in the day. Anyone remember that show?) Anyway, in this cartoon the brothers have special suits that let them mimic animals... including their instincts. Hence why Martin here (as a bass) has a glassy-eyed expression as a fish lure passes him by. I've had it for a while and I might change it if I can find anything else...

Mine is just a neat screenshot of sonic from Brawl, and was my avatar on most online places years and years ago.

Picked it mostly because I'm a huge fan of sonic, and I thought it looked badass.

The Escapist is actually the only forum I've never changed my avatar for. I did consider it recently, but at this point you guys probably all just associate it with me and I can't really be assed to update it at this point.

...Hilariously, the Escapist is basically the only forum I'm active on anymore. They all either died (RIP AGN and the Extra Credits forum), lost their appeal/cool people, or they're highly specialized and thus don't attract lots of interesting chatter (RPGmakerDotNet barely get any chatter outside of RPG design, for example).

...Doubly hilarious because some days I REALLY do feel like the only reason I come on the Escapist is do browse R&P and pull my hair out and then swear never to go there again, only for the cycle to repeat in a few days. XD
