I am just wondering what most of you see in it. The only anime that really made sense for a short amount of time was naruto, but then it got really complicated and i started to dislike it.

so even though i hate it (not trying to offend anyone here)

why do most people here (thats you) like it?
Hmm hard to say. I'm a big fan of the Ghost in the shell series and movies. Most of the ones I like infact tend to be short runs (or short compared to Naruto and DBZ).
Usually its the artistic styling, fresh view points and philosophies that are brought foreward by them. I find the japanese have a particular view to a lot of things which is refreshing.
Also in some of the more well known ones the storylines and characters develop in some intriguing ways, I was hooked on Deathnote for example.

I don't like all anime, but there are some series that are quite enjoyable.

Anything by Gonzo is typically some kind of money grab, with plot holes the size of Buicks and cliches like... you get the idea. Shangri-la was pretty good though, at least as far as the setting and some of the back story. Vipers Creed and Blassreiter were both visually appealing but the writing and story... eck.

Geneon tends to license titles that can be turned into merchandise, but some of them do have their own merits. Full Metal Alchemist, Neon Genesis Evangelion, etc.

The list goes on.

In the end though, the writing, subject material and characterizations tend to be very different from what you see in North American broadcasting and film. Similarly, animation is the only way to execute some of the required visual elements, due to limitations of both budget and reality, not to mention that the simplified yet exaggerated features allow for a much clearer depiction of emotion and mood while also giving an unprecedented level of control. If NA studios did similar work, then I'd be watching NA animation, but they don't so I can't.

My personal observation is that the powers that be see animation as either a medium strictly for overly simplified children's media, or as high-end visual effects. There's just no middle ground. Hell, even 3D animation isn't being used for consumption by people over over the age of 12 (maybe, the only series that I can really address that to is Reboot and I still find that series awesome), CG is used purely as an effects tools and then is put back on the shelf. Kind of sad really.

Oh this thread's coming up again? Well I'll just put another reason that happens to be the biggest.

Well since I watch anime like Clannad and Toradora! and Kaichou wa Maid-sama and Rurouni Kenshin, I really enjoy their themes like love and compassion, and I also a lot watch for the lessons they teach you. Surprisingly it's made me a pretty moral, just person.

There was the Starship Troopers Roughnecks series that was pretty good too, but that was pretty short lived.

You do realize that Naruto...the anime that you said made the most sense to you, (for a short period of time) is probably one of the least sensible animes out there? There are hundreds of animes that make more sense and have a better story than Naruto. One Piece forever!

Good call, I had forgotten about that series. Very short-lived indeed, although I kept getting the feeling that they were trying to redeem the license as much as anything else. Marauder kind of confirmed that for me. Still, definitely aimed at a slightly older audience, dealing with more mature and complicated subject-matter. Too bad it didn't do very well, it might have helped set a new precedent for western animation.
