It's great for keeping in touch with friends and setting up events.
There are a lot of people on there that I would never have kept in touch with under more traditional communication means, but are still very good friends courtesy of the ease with which facebook allows conversation.
Also I dislike talking on the phone (the whole 'not seeing people's faces' thing. Still gets to me), but that's not an issue for me if I also can't hear their voice. Hence facebook chat (because no-one uses MSN etc. anymore)
As a co-existing advantage/disadvantage, it allows you to contact people given no more information than their name. Good if you need to send a message, bad if the person making use of such a facility is a little stalky...
