I recently got my hands on the original stalker - shadow of chernobyl.
I'll state now that I'm not that much of an FPS gamer so I went into this with a rather biast prethought.

I started off thinking this was going to be some weak attempt at a sci fi horror game set in some uninhabitated wasteland where all I would met is the odd dude to progress the story while fending off weird freakish monsters.

Much to my surprise I now find myself totally in love with the game and heres why:

The atmosphere is so immersive that half the time I forget Im playing a game. All the wrecked buildings, the over cast sky, the random sweeping winds while all the time feeling partially alone but always knowing there are friends in certain locations if you truely feel you need to be around friendly NPCs.

I also love the gunplay in this game and this was never truer than when I was doing the mission to get the digital key from a dude called Borov in ahalf built factory where I spent the mission sneaking around in the shadows with a silenced AKm 72/u2 assassinating his men before finally bringing him down.

I stopped at the occassional window to peer outside into the marshy terrain outside as it got darker and a thunderstorm kicked up and I thought to myself, for a sci fi game based on a "what if" its damn realistic.

I recently modded the game with something called "Oblivion Lost" and for anyone who is planning to try the game out at some point or has it and never modded it, I strongly recommend it. It adds so much and balances out a few of the lamer things in the game such as your weight limit (it goes from 50 - 80 lbs which isnt cheating seeing as I usually carry enough ammo, med kits and vodka to supply a small russian army in my bags) it also added more random events like faction battles between Duty and Freedom, the military and the bandits as well as random mutant events.

I really do feel this is a game I can play time and again just because of the mix of horror, atmosphere and gameplay.

Why do you guys like or hate it?

I recently got Call of Prypiat. Didn't really like it that much, there wasn't much explanation on what to do, whats going on, how things work. And there was that bobbing camera thing which my stomach really doesn't like.

I did like how the gunplay worked though. That part scores full marks from me.

I enjoyed Shadow of Chernobyl, and I was especially pleased that I was able to figure out how to get the best ending out of the 5 or so that are possible. The atmosphere is S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games is second to none, and in my opinion, they surpass anything that the Fallout franchise could ever present when it comes to creating a believable post-apocalyptic nuclear wasteland. The Zone is alive with unique characters, creepy wildlife, and full of dangerous radioactive anomolies, and that is a huge selling point when it comes to immersion.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Clear Sky is still sitting on my shelf. I am going to get around to finishing it sooner or later.

I am in the early portions of Call of Pripyat right now, and I would suggest picking it up if you ever get the chance. It wins points in my book because of the random energy emissions that occur every couple of days or so that can incinerate you if you don't take cover and replenish anomolies with artifacts. I find it to be an interesting and compelling gameplay element. I have yet to fully unravel the story (which I hear is a little more shallow than Shadow of Chernobyl), but I am looking forward to seeing how it ends. I also find myself liking the fact that there is a free-play mode after beating the game that allows the player to wander the Zone at will after completing the game (without mods).

Man there is so much love for this game, THQ are just fantastic when it comes to making games.
Im currently at the point where I had to go into the X-18 lab and I have to admit it freaked me out abit. I now own a 12 gauge shotgun so Im heading back in soon with that in hand ^^

Currently in my possession is a silenced AK for those sneaky kills, Dragonov for the long range kills, Lee Enfield for the precision kills (and my favourite gun right now Ill add) and my 12 gauge. I carry a silenced pistol for those rare moments where you can sneak up behind a bandit and relieve him of his breathing requirement without letting his mates know he wont be at their poker game tonight.

The immersion is unbelievable and I agree with yourlocalpcsnob once you mod it it goes from being a decent FPS with a great story to a work of gaming art.

Im just wondering around right now doing all the side missions, putting off having to go into X18 haha but I am enjoying the sniping as I just did the mission to rescue Kruglov from the Mercs and the number of headshots I scored with my Lee Enfield just made my cyber penis grow 8 inches xD

Havent tried clear sky or Pripyat yet as I wanna play them in order but I will defo get them both at some point after I have finished Shadow of Chernobyl.

THQ does not make STALKER, the developers are called CSG Game World, and THQ is the publisher, and is generally blamed for the multitude of bugs and cut features in SoC, as they were pushing CSG for an earlier release.

Oh, and if you're interested in mods, I'd recommend checking these out:

STALKER Complete 2012 [http://www.moddb.com/mods/stalker-complete-2009], practically "patches" the game to current gen level.

L.U.R.K [http://www.moddb.com/mods/lurk] newest version just got released, I haven't played it myself, so I'm not quite sure what it does, but I hear it's good.

And whilst I'm at it:

I said come in, don't stand there! [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/groups/chat/S-T-A-L-K-E-R]

Sorry my bad, Im abit of a THQ fanboy after playing DoW / CoH and with the up coming release of Space marine I kinda just assumed they made it.

Still Kudos CSG you do good work and I pray for a Stalker 2 which is a whole new character in the same settings with the same free will and open roaming.

Hell I'd even buy a MMOFPS version of the game if they launched it.
All the same maps but slightly bigger, I said SLIGHTLY as they are great as they are but to accomodate a big online community some size would be needed.

I'll check out the mods and ive just joined the group.
Just a side thought, does the 2012 and Lurk mods work with Oblivion lost? dont wanna clash them.
Thanks for the heads up Arachon <3

EDIT:

Just a quick thought, anyone else noticed ALL the Stalkers are men?

THQ shouldn't be getting the credit for those games, they are made by Relic.

CoP isn't a good one to start with tbh. Go grab SoC and start there.

Man Im not having a good day for discerning publishers from makers.
Well Kudo's Relic then for making a great game series and I think I'll write to steam and tell them to stop calling it the THQ collection when its made by different makers.

And as an aside Relic aren't even really Relic anymore, most of the team responsible for making DoW and CoH have left to form a new studio whose name escapes me. The new team are rubbish and are pretty much responsible for the current terrible state of CoH and DoW2.

As for Stalker, I completely love it. If one of the major devs had at least 10% of the imagination and drive that GSC have we could be looking at sparking off a new Golden age instead of rehashing the same old crap.

I am really really hoping for a true STALKER 2, with a fully open world with the best elements from SoC and CoP combined.

I thought the atmosphere and gunplay were fantastic.

I was less of a fan of the quests and inventory system. Running back and forth to turn in the whatsit over and over again while searching every nook and cranny for ammo and crap to sell wore on me. Part of the problem is that I have a compulsive need to grab and sell every possible piece of equipment ever. I can't stand leaving something behind and knowing that I'm therefore less rich than I could be. Even if I already have more money than I can spend.

Haha Neuro I got the same issue with leaving stuff behind, But now I just take ammo, food and medicine from bodies and even then only ammo for my 4 favourite guns. I even had to sell my pistol ammo and stop collecting it after I reached 1500 rounds :s

Im currently modding in the 2012 Complete mod for the gfx and I grabbed the lurk thing too.
I hope for a stalker 2 and yes Ebass I agree, if the major companies bothered with original and deeply involving ideas like GSC the industry wouldnt be publishing so many god forsaken sequels and they would be pushing out more original games with great stories like this one.

The reason its great is because, it DID happen, Chernobyl DID melt down and the average human being knows that radioactive material causes mutation, after that its just down the programmers to decide what mutants are gonna be after our juicy brains and they did a great job adding those in too.

In agreement with Straying bullet too, When I play it I love the feeling of loneliness I get wandering around Yantar or the military warehouses wondering if that noise behind me was the wind or something interested in finding a new use for my blood outside my body. I just wish I had a better pc to play it on as I keep getting graphical lag spikes and its kinda ruining it for me.

Anyway Im currently on the mission to find the Mk6 grenades for the commander of Duty so I guess I better gamefaqs how to do it considering I attacked the freedom base earlier and purged all known life from it. So the chef is dead and that means I need a map pointing to the crate with the 'nades >_<
