I recently got my hands on the original stalker - shadow of chernobyl.
I'll state now that I'm not that much of an FPS gamer so I went into this with a rather biast prethought.
I started off thinking this was going to be some weak attempt at a sci fi horror game set in some uninhabitated wasteland where all I would met is the odd dude to progress the story while fending off weird freakish monsters.
Much to my surprise I now find myself totally in love with the game and heres why:
The atmosphere is so immersive that half the time I forget Im playing a game. All the wrecked buildings, the over cast sky, the random sweeping winds while all the time feeling partially alone but always knowing there are friends in certain locations if you truely feel you need to be around friendly NPCs.
I also love the gunplay in this game and this was never truer than when I was doing the mission to get the digital key from a dude called Borov in ahalf built factory where I spent the mission sneaking around in the shadows with a silenced AKm 72/u2 assassinating his men before finally bringing him down.
I stopped at the occassional window to peer outside into the marshy terrain outside as it got darker and a thunderstorm kicked up and I thought to myself, for a sci fi game based on a "what if" its damn realistic.
I recently modded the game with something called "Oblivion Lost" and for anyone who is planning to try the game out at some point or has it and never modded it, I strongly recommend it. It adds so much and balances out a few of the lamer things in the game such as your weight limit (it goes from 50 - 80 lbs which isnt cheating seeing as I usually carry enough ammo, med kits and vodka to supply a small russian army in my bags) it also added more random events like faction battles between Duty and Freedom, the military and the bandits as well as random mutant events.
I really do feel this is a game I can play time and again just because of the mix of horror, atmosphere and gameplay.
Why do you guys like or hate it?
