because I just listen to music because I like it or I have posative memories associated with i, not because Im a teenage duffering from angst or I think Im rebelling againts...somthing
I used to be a big fan of Linkin Park (well still am) but I recently listened again and paid attention to the lyrics... and man are they angsty. Pretty ridiculous in hindsight.
But still great music.

As for stereotypes, there's no smoke without fire. You can tell something about someone's personality based on their musical preference, and have a higher probability you're correct. Probability, as each individual is different, so sure you can not be like the stereotype at all.

However, although you don't listen to Linkin Park because you're rebelling, but because you like it, that leads to the next question: why do you like it? Why do other don't? There probably is something stereotypical somewhere going on.

EDIT: just look at the poster above me. There's someone that doesn't judges music on whether he likes it or not, he bases that on its popularity with others. Pack mentality. reverse pack mentality, but pack mentality nonetheless.

Just so long as it isn't satan-worshiping or demon-worshiping, if I like the sound, then I will listen to it. If I don't like the sound, then I don't care if it came from the best musician on earth who I love, I wouldn't listen to it.

well I wouldnt call myself a "fan" of linkin park (mabye more so back then..and by "then" I mean like 2007)...I guess one of my favorite songs of theirs is the old classic "tried so hard"...why do I like it? I dont know, it sounds good, and I supose we can all relate to the feeling of "trying failing miserably at somthing"

and I must be one of the few peopel in the world who actullay like their "new" stuff (yes I like the song "the catalyst")...for the love of god I actually cant tell whats all that "different" about it (and its not that angsty eather) I mean minutes to midnight was a quite a change

anyway what about Nine inch nails?...isnt that suposed to be all wangsty? well THAT I am a huge fan of...

anyway if a songs lyrics are vauge/abstract enough then you can apply all kinds of meaning to it (let your imagination run wild) where as its hard to really get into a song whos lyrics are "gonna party all night" type thing

It can be uplifting, or heartrending. It can be joyful or full of sorrow. It can be anything or mean anything. It can be full of memories. Music is universal.

I feel like the OP asks one question in the thread title and a completely different one (lacking even the resemblance of proper grammar) in the thread body.

I listen to music because it's sets me in a special mood. I love different kinds of music, though punk rock and sub-genres of punk rock is my preference. I got nothing against a little Tupac or Bryan Adams from time to time.
Do I fit into the stereotype of listening to punk? Yes and no. Politically I agree with a lot of their messages. Take songs like Die For The Government, Killing In The Name or Survive. They all have messages I like and I will share that opinion. I don't dress any different than the people I hang out with except that I like wearing shirts with buttons.

I doubt anyone would guess my taste in music without knowing me. I don't think that most of those who know me really knows what kind of music I like.

But that right there is likely a preference based on personality and not something in isolation.

Because its both an outlet and an abstract (but very effective) form of escapism for me.

I guess you don't have to fall into the stereotype to like a certain band/musician but, from my experience, many, sometimes even most, do. I don't know whether I do myself as I'm not sure what the stereotype is for the music I listen to.

actually my real pont here is: often music gets associated with a certian "group" or steryotype

if you like one gender your obviously some twat who thinks he/she is being all rebelious..if you liek another your a wanabe gangsta idiot and so on....

so my point is..does anyone actually listen to music because of thease superficial reasons?

is it possible to listen to and apreciate somthing like linkin park and KoRn and NOT fit the sterotype? just listen to it because you like the music?

because I can understand somone critcising music because they dont like the sound, but I what I cant stand (or understand) is somone critcizing music because of the kind of people who listen to it (you know, steryotypically)

because I just listen to music because I like it or I have posative memories associated with i, not because Im a teenage duffering from angst or I think Im rebelling againts...somthing

so..what about you? do you also avoid listening to certain types of music because of the kind of people its associated with?
I don't "listen" to any music. That is by "listen" I mean I don't own or intentionally put on music for the sole sake of listening to it.

I like all kinds of music, mainly rock, alternative, pop, J-Pop, J-rock, Celtic, reggae... I guess I just like having something to listen to.

I'm the kind of person that you see thouroghly enjoying Beethoven's 9th but can see the brilliance and beauty of Nine Inch Nails(huge fan). I literally can see something to like to almost every kind of music like jazz, blues, metal, old rock, classical, eletronic/house/trance/acid house and all that. There's just one kind of musical stereotype that i don't understand, and that's the one that ONLY listens to club music, bieber and all that because it's easy to dance to. I'm befuddled if they are in any way moved by the music they listen to, if they feel joy, sorrow or any kind of feeling while listening to... that.

Oh and under the stereotype chategory, i'm not any kind of musical stereotype, i may hang out with metalheads or industrial freaks, bu i don't look like either, I have invented myself in my own way, I know that there are many peoiple that say that THEY are special and different from other people but really are just fitting in.... I'm truly different.

Some of my favourites include: Ratatat, Nine Inch Nails, Rammstein, Marilyn Manson, Death, Deadmau5, Wolfgang Garnter, Autechre, Aphex Twin, Psyclon Nine, Bring The Horizon, Dimmu Borgir, Sabaton, Two Steps From hell, Audiomachine and many, many more.

I listen to both Folk music AND Black metal, yet I don't have a beard, tends to separate me out a bit. Also with regards to the second of those I don't have long hair, though I would if it was easier to wash. So yeah, I don't outwardly fit in with those groups. I find that they're pretty friendly though, although outwardly the metal fans especially can look a bit rough, they're a decent bunch once you get to know them. So essentially no, I listen to music I like regardless of who listens to it, and I am yet to find a reason to change this.

I'm liking the number of people who clearly just read the thread title. Also kudos to Metal Hipster, I'm going to think of something witty and edit it in here.

Judging people by the music they listen to is silly. Now if they listen to a certain type of music exclusively and live a lifestyle associated with that music then I guess you can judge them. I wouldn't judge them necessarily in a negative light but I would think they are limiting themselves.
I listen to all kinds, depends on my mood and what I am doing. I listen to music because I need to. It's food for my soul. I keep a spare mp3 player just in case I break or lose the one I have because if I go 2 to 3 days without one I start getting depressed.

I have a very eclectic taste in music and wear it as a badge of pride.

But I think a funny story is in order- in my home town nights out clubbing are a dead miss, most clubs do only dire music apart form one, a rock and heavy metal night called Discord. Now I never knew about it until I befriended a bunch of rather awesome metalheads who invited me along after spending a lesson gushing about music together, but when I turned up at the club in a shirt, jeans and smart shoes they werent impressed- to say I stood out in a crowd of sweaty pale skinned people in leather was an understatement, it was kinda funny.
