1 guess I have is that..enough people view Fallout 3 as an Oblivian Mod. So they figure..they might as well play Oblivion properly as it was intended. That of course isn't MY view of the game, but have heard a lot of people say that in the past. Personally, I hated oblivion..but that's another issue entirely.

Pretty epic thread necro there.

OT:

I love them both, but Fallout just pips it for me. It's all just down to taste, I get more immersed in F3 than any other game.

The world is more colourful and has more variety. The sneaking gameplay feels a lot more useful. You get a lot more freedom in creating spells and enchantments, your equipment is more interesting since it doesn't just amount to "get power armor, equip and win game" Since even if you get to the level where daedric armor appears in Oblivion you might not want it depending on your build if you're a mage or you use light or medium armor instead. The DLC/expansion is a lot more satisfying too. This of course is all purely personal opinion.
100% agree. The world of Oblivion really sucked me in. It felt very organic with so much to discover and enjoy on such an impressive scale. The only other games that have done this for me are GTA San Andreas and Red Dead Redemption. Fallout came close, but not quite for some reason.

I tend to think of the relationship between Fallout 3 and oblivion to be akin to the relationship between kOTO and Jade empire.

While the interfaces and mechanics feel a bit similar they've got completely different settings, themes, feels, combat, gameplay and stories.

Personally I preferred Fallout 3 slightly more and I thought Oblivion was great too.

I myself do not compare them, wxwpt on the point that they are both FP-RPG with a really open consept of exploration. If I where to guess of a reason why many prefer Oblivion I would guess that they prefer the fantasy-theme rather than the apocalyptic future-theme.

For me, Oblivian felt alot bigger and there was alot more things to do and people to talk to. Fallout felt very empty, which is probally what they were going for but still, it put me off it.

Personally the reason I liked Oblivion over Fallout 3 was because Oblivion had no true ending, sure the main story may be over but then there are the guild quests, side quests and any number of things to do,all of which had their own ending, even without DLC you could continue on after the main quest. This is the reason Oblivion succedes so well, you dont need the DLC to enjoy it but the extra content only makes the world that much more fun.

Where as in Fallout 3 you are immediatly returned to the title screen without an offer to continue on after the end no matter what you decided, essentialy forcing you to either load an earlier save or start over all togethor unless you got the now pretty much mandatory DLC, Broken Steel.

I like them both about equal.

One game is alot more fun to screw around in. With fallout, i can, forgive the term but, "Stick my d*ck into the nearest hole" and still have a good time. Even if that hole happens to be full of Ghouls and super mutants, i can still ahve a great time. Plus its just d*mn fun to mini nuke a group of people fighting over water, and then leave the water there because i dont need it.

But when it comes to oblivion, i just love doing quests. Even if ive done them all before, i have a great time just walking back through the story. Seeing the sights, stealing pointless things, punching horses off of Dive Rock.

They both have theyer charms, and i love neather more then the other.

Most people don't.

A lot of people prefer Morrowind to Oblivion..
That I will never understand.
Because the leveling system in oblivion sucked. If you picked any non-combat skills as your primaries, and happened to level those first, such as stealth and lockpicking, you basically got weaker as you leveled due to the npc's getting stronger, while your combat abilities don't change. Even if you do level with nothing but combat skills, you never get the feeling of getting stronger, since everything levels with you. I found sneaking around and looting to be fairly rewarding in morrowind, so I set up my first oblivion character accordingly, and got my ass kicked more and more as I leveled. Also, the quality of quest-reward items being based on the level you acquired them was kind of annoying.

As for the OT, I disliked FO3 because I hated the combat, and, aside from melting that one town, found the story and setting to be pretty dull. Managing ammo and radiation wasn't exactly fun, either. Oh, and the fact that long-range shooting was HEAVILY imbalanced in favor of npc's, at least at low levels anyways.

So, basically: Morrowind > Oblivion > FO3

Oblivion is larger than fallout 3, fallout 3 is just like a square land thats like 2 kilometers diameter and has invisible walls for the map edge. and i hated the 1960's style with the art and everything it looks so lame and disgusting and outdated, however the drama and storytelling at the start was somewhat impacting.

Oblivion all the way. open and dynamic melee combat is the best. just like demon's souls that i platinumed lol

Just don't say because it was grey =)
Because Oblivion doesn't piss on the ashes of its ancestors and it has a much better story and setting than Fallout 3.

Yeah, I went there.

I think although you can tell they were made by the same company, Fallout 3 and Oblivion are different games and they appeal to different fanbases.
Personally, although I thought Oblivion was a game with a ton of flaws, I think it's by far superior to Fallout 3- but then I'm not into the post-apocalyptic shooter thing.

I found Fallout 3 renewed my appreciation for Oblivion.

Fallout 3's sneaking and lockpicking were crap and essentially useless, where in Oblivion it was not only useful, but felt like it followed sensible rules. I don't see why in Fallout you couldn't at least have a crack at a difficult lock- especially considering I tend to be very good at Bethesda lockpicking.
Hacking was equally random. I know there's supposed to be some kind of logic to it, like playing Mastermind, but I just didn't get it. It seemed totally unfair.
And VATS- what is the point of having a numbers-based system if the numbers are just for show? If I see that I have a 98% shot at something's head, I do not expect to miss 6 shots in a row.
Oblivion had more side quests that could be accessed steadily throughout the game, rather than the Fallout 3 method of putting an easy beginner's level-building quest on the far-side of a billion super-mutants and a highway of exploding cars.
I also don't get why people say Fallout 3 looked so nice- the whole landscape looked the same. Oblivion's is pretty same-y, but at least you could tell at a glance what end of the map you were in. Fallout was all grey rubble all the time.

I also thought the haircut selection in Fallout 3 was very poor, and I find that to be one of the most important parts of gaming for me.

I thought the same thing with Resident Evil/Dead Space..

didn't play Resident Evil 4... played Dead Space, and people said it was "Just Resident Evil 4 in space!".. Then Resident Evil 5 came out, and everyone said that was "Just resident evil 4 in africa!" so I played that, and I hated it.

Oblivions sidequests were more interesting. Where was my fighting trolls in a magical painting quest in Fallout 3, hmm? However, Fallout 3 gains major ++ points for not combining the annoying NPCs level with player thing with a terribly designed levelling system like Oblivion did. FFS if you're going to make me chose major skills at least let me use them without gimping my character!

I'm a huge TES fan and I'll be the first to say it:

Fallout 3 was an overall superior game to Oblivion.

Mostly because it improved on the pre-existing technology. Oblivion suffered a bit from Bethesda not being totally comfortable with the engine. The level scaling, lack of dialogue and repetitive gameplay being examples.

i think it just boils down to your favorite gaming, if you like fantasy slash happy games you'll like Oblivion if you like Gritty gun fun games you will like Fallout... i Prefer oblivion because of how you level up and the ever expanding world with both the DLC and the Nexus plus i find myself being able to try out different classes instead of a gun wielder like Fallout. Plus in Oblivion there are a SHIT LOAD of side quest and magic items to find and wield.
