Because a noob is someone who doesn't try to play the game and they just annoy people.

Newbies on the other hand are those that are willing to learn and play properly, trying to not annoy the others.

What we have is a term misunderstanding.
I always figured it like this:
n00b: An annoying person within a game.
Newb (Or Newbie): Someone new to a game.

n00bs are bad.
Newbs are fine.

That's the way I always thought it was, anyways.

People don't hate "newbies" they hate "noobs" which essentially is a moron.

Everybodys been new at a game before, you go on, play sensibly ask a few questions and get to a respectable level pretty quick.

What people hate is when someone joins a server runs right infront of people and sprays bullets everywhere teamkilling everyone constantly spamming the chatbox
"HOW I UZE GRENADE ON DEM?"
"WHERE IS ENEMY LOL!%!£!!!!!"
"LOLOLOLOLOL"

Because if you suck so much, you make it impossible for your team to win, you should stick to single player or LAN parties with your special education classmates.
Other than that I have nothing against noobs.

I don't hate noobs.

A noob is someone who's new to a game, makes a dumb mistake, but learns from it. Since Counter Strike: Source has no training mode you meet los of players who don't know what to do with the bomb or hostages, they only make that mistake once.

Now complete, willful idiots...

I don't mind someone that is new to a game, however someone that is in over their head and doesn't realize it, is a problem.

That's always what I've been given to understand. A n00b is anyone, regardless of actual experience level, who commits a stupid, ignorant act that could've been avoided with just a little bit of common sense. A newb(ie) is just a newcomer, someone who makes stupid mistakes because they haven't learned not to yet.

True.

But I can never hear the difference when people say either one so I take a guess.

not all noobs are annoying, the problem is the one that poses as pro. I have seen this many times, the worst one was a race in Grid (Euro Tunning) when I was behind a car, and the guy started yelling that I was never going to catch him and that I was a *insert x insult here" for an entire lap, just before crossing the finish line I said "you know I have a lap advantage over you" and crossed the finish line, while he ranted about me being a cheater.

Noob bashing is a rite of passage, kind of like the informal fraternity hazing initiation process, but for gamers. Noobs are bashed because of tradition.

At least, that's what I was told when pwned my ass with the noob paddle...?

Most interweb definitions call that type of player a newb, not a noob.

A n00b by contrast would be a guy that makes a dumb mistake and then says it wasn't his mistake but the game somehow made the mistake, or other players if it's a multiplayer game and then he does the same thing again, and if you try to warn him what he's doing wrong he just gets angry at the "stupid game that sucks and all the n00bs playing it". That would be a n00b.

Newbs != Noobs

Newbs are people who have just started playing and are learning the ropes. They want to get better and are open to constructive advice.

"Noob" is a term used by certain types of people, mostly Arseholes and Actual Noobs to describe anyone whose playstyle they don't approve of in any way or as a sign of disrespect.

Actual Noobs are similar to Newbs, except they don't want to learn or get better. They are convinced of their own superiority despite lacking any competence in whatever game they are playing.

Bear in mind that only an Arsehole or an Actual Noob would use the term "Noob" when adressing another person.
