Why does everyone like Cloud?

I don't, really. I prefer Cid Highwind...

Anyway... I suppose because he actually has somewhat of a personality and history, unlike an awful lot of player characters in modern games.

I dislike Cloud. Then again I dislike most JRPG and, by default, FF main characters.
They seem to complain about having so many problems whilst at the same time having a world breaker amount of power hidden somewhere within their androgynous bodies.

You know why i like him, its cause unlike most other game characters, his life comes crashing down atop of him and he does act like a human and give up, he does take some time off to recollect himself. Unlike most hero's who pretty much say "Meh" to the entire thing, flip it the bird, fart in its general direction before pissing off to save the day without any hint of emotion based around it.
I say it makes him more relatable than other people.

I can't stand Cloud. But then, I don't care for Final Fantasy VII at all. It's the weakest of the bunch, but I've only played VII - XII.
As far as protaganists go, Zidane Tribal was possibly the most relatable and had much more depth.

As for me, I never played many FF games but generally people like the characters because they are there avatar for an entire game. In addition, JRPG protagonist are different from Western protagonist so people put off by more local games may like them. Once again, I can't say anything about specific FF stuff but I do know that I like a protagonist who can show more mention then joy at killing something and will actually cry if the situation calls for it.

Hell, when I was 10, I even made a sword depicting his in a "giant" module to think of my size.
