Why does Fallout 4 have such ugly graphics?

Because it is Bethesda, and Bethesda haven't made a good looking game - relative to the time that it was released - since Oblivion, which came out in 2006.

The funny thing is, Fallout 4 runs like absolute ass, and it has no reason for doing so. The launch performance on both of the consoles was just laughable.

Hopefully Bethesda actually decides to adopt a new engine for whatever is coming out next. Not that i'll care, though; Bethesda coincidentally haven't made a good game since Oblivion, in 2006.

It's a mix of old tech and boring themes/art direction. Making such a huge worlds also takes time and the standars change quickly.

I don't mind the graphics at all actually, but wherever art is any good or not is subjective. I suspect the rationale was that they wanted an art-style that wasn't 50 shades of brown, and a vaguely cartoonish style compliments the general retro-future the game goes for.

It's a good game overall, but the bone I have to pick with the game is that how you're forced to choose sides at inconvenient times which ruins the immersion and you end up failing a load of quests because of it. There should be more story-line paths really.

I really liked Fallout 4 and basically everything about it. Bethesda has never been a studio that focused on graphical fidelity and honestly I think it's a better game because of that fact. They were able to focus that time they would have spent elsewhere like the combat, which felt light years better than in FO3/NV. I think the slightly cartoonish style will actually keep it from looking dated as quickly as well (though honestly i don't see how graphics can really improve that much in general anymore).

But i'm also not a graphics whore who plays on a brand new rig that can render movement on individual beard hairs and I've never looked at a wall inches from my face and complained when the texture looked a bit blurry. (forums need a universal sarcasm emote. ugh)

I'm a lot easier to please than quite a few people I've met on this and other forums.
