Why does it seem that there is this false dichotomy

where it seems to some people that you either:
a) Support the current copyright laws exactly the way they are
or
b) you are a pirate who never buys anything or supports piracy.

There is always a group of people who act like this any time that a thread involving copyright law is made. It seems like any time someone expresses displeasure with current copyright law, there's always somebody yelling about how you're supporting piracy. It really gets on my nerves. Why can't some people accept a middle ground? Or am i just being an idiot, and this doesn't actually happen?

Because it's either us or them. And you aren't exactly squeaky clean either. Hell, you probably steal everything you have, since you are backing up the damn pirates. It's people like you that are recking our great country!

/sarcasm

To be honest, a lot of people see the world in two shades: In this case, you are either a filthy scurvy riddled pirate, or you support the copyright laws to the core. And unfortunately, nothing short of brain washing can dislodge an "Us verse them" logic, so don't expect to change

yeah id have to say its the us vs them thing and it would also be to difficult for people to understand everyones different shades and find out what they support and what they dont and all that. much easier to pigeon hole everyone in to 2 holes instead of 50

Just as a note, I absolutely love the IT crowd. One of my favorite shows.

See what especially pisses me off is that i see this come into play here on the escapist, which seems to be one of the more level headed forums on the internet. I mean, i'd expect this sort of thing from the imdb politics board (which i swear has more tolls than 4chan), but the fact that this happens here as well, with a group of posters i feel should know better, gets on my nerves.

It's odd, I don't really get that feeling from the posts here. I probably take a more industry-friendly stance than most but I'd say the majority of posters are along the "yeah I pirate a bit but I also think piracy could be kind of bad" lines.
