Why does Sony do the things they do?

Okay I live in Canada so this may be different from anyone elsewhere but I just had to see what everyone thinks.

Yesterday I was in EB (Canadian Gamestop) and was infering as to the 80 gig PS3 and MGS4 bundle since it is supposed to be out June 12th. These guys had no idea of a price point,(even though Best Buy says $499.00) or how many they were going to get and thus could not take preorders? Huh?

When have you ever heard of a gaming store not taking preorders whether they were getting one or three hundred of any product.

But I digress, I also asked if they had any 80 gig Ps3's available at this time and they said no, Sony is no longer making or releasing them until June 12, again WTH?

Why does sony a big conglomerate company hinder themselves so far past their initial release? It cannot be from difficulty in manufacturing since their are a million useless 40 gig ps3's available.

Can anyone please give me any reason for this horrible business model? BTW best buy and Future shop were also sold out of the 80 gig. If this is a sales tactic it is a horrible one.

they pulled the 80 gig a while ago, it was on a few game news sites, they let the stock run out so they could make room for the 80 gig mgs bundle

all console makers do that every once in a while so they can clear out stock they have sitting around, the 80 gig is in high demand

i'm happy with my 60 gig, i got it cause i wanted to ps2 chip onboard rather than a software emulator that the newer ones have

I like to think of Sony's business model as follows:

Ya but the thing about demand is that it is only useful for products that increase in value and as we all know technology initally is very expensive but routinely decreases in price until the company makes no more and it becomes a collectible.

That to me is just stupid and irresponsible business and the reason for the 80 gig is that aside from the larger memory it gets all the bells and whistles that the 40 and 60 just do not have.

As for emulation bah I have a psx and ps2 as should all gamers :p.

the big thing with the 60 gig was they were losing a lot of money cause of the chip, software emulation made things cheaper, maybe as costs go down they'll add the chip back but not right now

so for them to change to the 80 gig was actually a smart business move. also it's not the money black hole that the xbox is, that console has cost m$ more money than a new york hooker can make with a 2 for one red light special

that really shouldn't have made me laugh like it did :D

um, Sony have their reasons, a little patience won't go amiss - unless you travelled 80 miles by foot for this EB inquiry

me? love some Sony products, hate their attitude towards business (especially gaming localisation) Always got the feeling that once they saw Megazone 23 they doubled their efforts to be a 'ruthless corporation'

let's just hope they don't attempt to phase out SD cards in favour of MS Pro Duos :(

Well, I really can't comment. Though, if I had some say, I'd tell them to stop making all the different SKUs, but, you know, not CEO or anything...

Well to help you out on the price ordeal, the retailers can't sell it for anything more or less than 499.00 (USD here) - you can still preorder them on Amazon.com but I don't know if they ship to canada.

Nintendo are trying the same tactic here in the UK. It's still near impossible to get Wiis some weeks, and games like Mario Kart are like gold dust because they deliberately published small quantities of the game.

To shout at just Sony for this business ploy, to me, isn't very fair.

P.S. what's stopping you buying the other PS3 models? Aren't I right in saying there's a higher and lower Gig PS3 out there?

Each model has it's own strengths and weaknesses, the 60 gig is the best one but if a store has one of those, an employee is likely to take it before you do.

Haha, Anarch I'll agree with you there...a Emulator (at least, a good one) and the PS2 is virtually useless, except if Persona or GoW doesn't work.

Although I just noticed we are on the verge of threadjacking and turning this into a console war so I'll stop there.

Anyway, I'll be getting the MGS4 bundle, I bet they aren't allowing pre-orders for these reasons:

1.) They probably have a limited amount of 80 gig PS3's left so if they get more pre-orders than they can deliver, there may be a problem.

2.) They try to use that to make it look like it's a "HOT NEW ITEM GET IT WHILE IT LASTS!" Kind of thing...like the Wii (and not being able to reserve one) - it took me 6 months to find this over-rated waggle box, I love it and all but man, no wonder it's cheap, this thing cut so many corners that it's practically worthless in Hardware, no ethernet, no Hard Drive, gah!!! [/mini-rant]

BTW OP: If hard drive space is all you are really worrying about, get one of the other SKU's and just go to newegg and buy a cheap Toshiba 160 gig HDD and just switch them, it pretty much is as easy as it sounds if your PS3 is brand new.

I may be wrong, but isn't the 80gig bundle with MGS4 only sold on the kojima website? I'm pretty sure it is.

i think so but both futureshop and bestbuy have it listed on their website, gamestop and ebgames don't, which makes me suspicious of futureshop/bestbuy

right cause maybe they ARE still the 800 pound gorilla that you think they used to be

thing about the 360 is it's only outselling the ps3 in america, in japan one month of ps3 sales beats out the 360 sales for over a year, that's not even counting europe

In all honesty, spending $400 on a PS3 is much better than shelling out $2000 for a gaming PC.

As for Gamestop giving you the run-around, that's more of an issue on Gamestop's part than Sony's.

And how is the 40gb useless? it's the exact same system only with half the HDD and no memory card slots. It would be cheaper to get the 40gb model and buy a bigger HDD separate.
