If everything were free - why would you need a charity worker? Get your own damn stuff. It's free isn't it? (See how quickly that breaks down?) There is not a sane person on this earth that wants to do something for someone else just because. There is always a motivating factor - love, money, power, sex, ice cream...

The barter system doesn't work if you have nothing to trade, so a currency solves that. You provide goods or services, and someone gives you currency in return. That currency represents value that you can now use to obtain the goods or services you want / need.

Ta da! It's a win win. :)

even if we did do that we'd essentially be switching to the exchange of services for goods. and Currency is EXACTLY that only with an added quantifiable standardized step in the process.

It's not the currency, it's the people.
