(fixed that typo)

Why doesn't Valve let Steam have commercials? Though it isn't hard, the only way you could hear about Steam is by Word of Mouth. Nothing really official. Obviously they have the money, so why not?

Also, anyone wanna hit me up on Steam, I'll be sure to reply.

Because they really have no need to do so, and they don't want to annoy the fuck out of everyone.

Valve get enough advertising with their "This game requires Steam" notice on the back of almost every PC game box from the past few years - I doubt they feel a need to waste money on something that others will do for them.

If you're a PC gamer then you've heard of Valve. Everyone who would want to use Steam already does or is planning to, so there's really no need.

I gues...but such a big service like this going on Word of Mouth alone? I think the cost of a commercial or two would be nice. It could also get some people who don't normally use their comps for gaming to give Steam a try.

It's worked well so far. Most gamers are aware of Steam, and it just seems like a waste of money to me when there's really no need for it.

Steam is nigh on unavoidable if you want to play a game on PC that has come out within the last couple of years. Therefore it doesn't need advertisement; Google it, download it and you're set.

And word of mouth is a powerful thing, and a healthy and very welcome alternative to advertising. I'm really quite glad that I don't have to see their adds everywhere, that's a main factor to what annoys me in... most other services. "Holy shit, buy our product! Guys, guys! Even if you have before, look at it! It's so shineh~"

And if you can't find Steam without a pile of adds to aid you, get off your computer.

It could also get some people who don't normally use their comps for gaming to give Steam a try.
People who don't use their computer for gaming would most likely have heard of the service already, unless they're BD&D. And even then, Steam may potentially be a factor for one to use their computer, but if they're happily using a console already, I'm sure they've made their choice.
