I been playing games for such a long time since I was 5 maybe, and I notice something. Why on Earth do the RPGS always make you dirt broke when ever you start playing?

Well, sometimes it has to do with the story (in oblivion, you start out as a prisoner, so it only makes sense that you're broke).

...Yeah, that's all I got.

Ehh, I Think devs feel it adds to the grandeur of the heroes rise to fame and glory in the process of saving the world. Humble beginnings and all.

Never bothered me personally, because invariably I will always spend a decent chunk of time at the begining of an RPG preparing in order to be sort of overpowered for the first real boss fight. In doing so I rarely if ever find myself in need of cash for long.

In Fallout 3, you come out of a vault, not with civilization rules. Seems fair to me.

Maybe the developers all want people to feel more like they're made themselves from nothing rather than being a big shot from the beginning? It's never really been something I've questioned as I'm so used to it.

I'm guessing everyone has seen that EP thingo on levelling up in reverse?
Can someone get a dev to do that already?

It will break the game if you can buy an enchanted sniper of awesomeness early on.
Plus it makes sense in New Vegas because if Benny is anything like me, he would have one through my pockets and stolen everything of Value

Don't you start off in Fallout: New Vegas with 100 caps or something like that? I don't know I haven't played it in a while.

In Dragon Age: Origins, if you have the Golems of Argmak installed, you get a mace right at the beginning. Go the the nearest merchant and sell it. You get 350 gold, which pretty much breaks the game. You can now buy anything you want right away. There's no resource management, no debating which weapon/armor you want because you can only afford one. You can buy items right away that increase your stats to well beyond starting level, to the point that you will rip the game apart.
So, that's why you're not allowed to start off rich in RPGs. The game will not be able to combat you.

Would make it too easy. Anything but zero and you can buy yourself a bunch of adventuring (in fantasy's case) gear and you already have a head start. If you start from zero you get to see the full prpgress to a hero.

So that you don't buy out the entire weapons store at the beginning of the game :p
Actually, that'd make a very interesting game...

Because its the start of the game? You havn't actually done stuff, so you don't need or deserve anything yet.

It's a common story form isn't it; climbing to the top from the bottom; being an underdog...

I do prefer it to be that way. Especially in RPG's where you most of the time build your own successful/heroic path. Works like a charm. There wouldn't be as much to fight for, if you were rich enough to do and buy pretty much whatever you like, right from the beginning.

And why do they always need me to save the world!?
Can't we just have one game where everybody is happy and I don't haveto play it... wait that wouldn't be much fun now would it.

Because money in RPGs functions, essentially, as another stat.
As you go up in levels you get stronger, faster, more powerful and generally richer. Money helps you get better gear and thus become more powerful.

To start off rich in an RPG would be comparable in most cases to starting off with god-like powers. Some games do this, but there's usually a point where you lose your powers and have to work your way up again.
