Why does escapist hate it's users? 1. The ads at the start of every video now, which are...ironically...unskippable. 2. The horrible flash content that pretty much drives people to seek out adblock, thus ensuring revenue streams drop further, exhibit A: http://db.tt/DSw3x8C

Not so sure it's hate so much as apathy. We're just eyeballs.

I think the escapist should look into the ad networks the Nexus modding sites use. The ads on Nexus are much less intrusive and I can't imagine escapist having expenses anywhere close to that of the Nexus.

By forum rules I really can't tell you about various methods of blocking ads, but I figure you know anyway.

Hmm

1) Not really the correct forum for a topic like this

2) It's somewhat suspicious that this is your only/first post, making it seem like you have a second account to not get into trouble

3) Hardly a new complaint.

4) And really the most important thing, as well as being actual advice on the advice forum, if you really have a concern contact the actual site owners. Don't make a thread about it that has been several times over.

Sorry, was looking for a "Website discussion/Forum discussion" etc. forum, but there wasn't one. Thought either here (seeing as it's kind of advice, perhaps I misunderstood the description) or off-topic.

No, this is my only account. I've been watching escapist vids for ages now, but the ads at the start of the videos (which are new, yes?) drove me to finally comment.

While I didn't search, I didn't see any recent threads anywhere on this topic. Sorry though.

I'd prefer an open discussion. Do the site owners comment here on these sort of topics?

Hey, if you don't like it leave. No-ones forcing you to stay here man. I'm so sick of sitting passively by while trolls try to harm this community. They're either jealous or really sad. Go have your fun somewhere else.

Report and move on guys.

I'd say the escapist loves it users, easily one of the most well maintained communities I've ever been involved with. I understand where you're coming from, I too have rolled my eyes at the start of a 30 second advertisement before I could watch my video. I've been blocked by the dead space pop-up at the bottom of the screen.

But it doesn't bother me, keeping a site like the escapist running requires a constant flow of money I've seen communities try to run a site without ad's and to live off donations and the large majority of these fail. These Ad's are what keeps the site going, really it only amounts to about 30 seconds of your time.

sure I have no idea about the actually cost/profit margin on the ad's but if the escapist wants to make money from their site who are we to judge? I can honestly say that if the situation were reversed and I ran the Escapist I'd be looking to make at least a little money on the site I poured years of my life into.

Just remember that ad's = money for the site

Thread moved to Off-topic Discussion, sorry OP but it didn't belong in the advice Forum.

You never know, maybe you'll like conversing with the community that you'll stay, I lurked for over a year before joining purely because I wanted to smack someone's ridiculous attitude down.

There was a thread about 1 day ago about this, but your new to searching the forum so its probable that you would have missed it, no biggie, it happens.

They do, but they repeat themselves quite a bit a it does get frustrating doing so, I can forward your concerns to the Nasrin the community manager if you like?, but I can already say that The Escapist IT guy is looking into the intrusiveness of the adverts you posted already, he started looking into about 24 hours ago though.

The Escapist site is supported entirely by ads, and so they must employ these in order to keep the site going. I have had much discussion on this with people who know and understand this fact. However, it is also a fact that the Escapist does not wish to drive away viewers with highly-irritating programs/advertisements, focusing on the most non-intrusive things they can find. What you have found...is something that they let through and then end up taking off again because of how many people it irritates.

Bottom Line: I've actually gone to people (like uhhh...editors and forum staff) about this and while ads will not vanish from this place (unless they take my donation box idea), they will work to keep out and/or remove the really annoying ones.
