I don't really agree with the idea that "real life" is "boring" and "crappy". It's really not. It can be quite exciting.

But I can agree that video games are just pure fun. Why gaming? Well, for some, it's because you can have your emotional strings pulled. For another, it's because you can take part in something flashy. For another, it's because they want to put their fast reflex's to use. For another it's because they want to drive fast cars. For another, it's because they are trying to entertain 3 of their friends. Etc etc... the reasons are pretty unlimited.

I have always been amazed by video games ! That started since the day I could get my hands on one of this new Gameboy demostations with Tetris or a NES with anything. My parents used that for their favour : Whats the best way to do some quiet and relaxing shopping with a 4 years old kid ? Park him at the Nintendo demo station !

They knew I would not do anykind of shit and stay there all there time playing or atleast watching other kids gaming.

Ofcourse a GB and very soon also a NES had to follow at home. The rest is history ;)

Why I do gaming today : Its fun. I know thats the statement of the universe, but that realy sums up all the joyfull hours I had with "fun games" like Mario Party or SEGA Rally. Good old innocent fun. Then I like it to get sucked in and get totaly lost in somekind of "gaming trance" - RPGs, SP-FPS and puzzle games have the highest chances to get me so far. You forget time and everything arround you - I love that. If you want you can also challange yourself in hard multiplayer battles or hunt the highest score, next archivement or higher level. Some people even use gaming as some kind of socialisation - but I never liked the idea of a "virtual romance" like some players have in Second Life, WoW or other MMOs.

I think gaming also has the best "fun and time for money" ratio then other famous activities people in my age have like hanging around in overfilled night-bars to spot some drunk sluts, overdrink yourself into a hospital, being on a parking lot and show other loosers your gayly pimped lower class car, hang all the time on your mobile phone or anything else like that.

To be honest, I have trouble understanding why people don't play games. I enjoy TV, movies and books, but I wouldn't want to be without computer games as well. Sometimes I want to vegetate in front of a story that's being played out for me; other times I want to interact with that story.

To explain my point: I work with someone who never plays games. But if I start telling him about things that I've done in GTA, he'll think that it's amazing that you can do these things in a game. Then, he'll ask me if you can do X, Y or Z in GTA, and often I won't know; so I wonder, 'Why don't you get an XBox and a copy of GTA4 and find out for yourself?'. He would quite obviously enjoy it, but there seems to be some kind of barrier to him doing so.

I truly cannot understand why anyone wouldn't want to experience Portal, or Bioshock. Maybe it's because it's not as accessible as other forms of entertainment. There's the high initial cost of getting involved with it as a hobby, and if you've ever watched someone play a FPS without having played games before, you'll understand that getting used to control systems takes time. But once you've got past that, you'd have to be crazy not to want to play games.

Yeah, always bugs me when people go 'you're wasting your life playing games' but they sit in front of 20 hours of TV each week.

I'm not defending it, sure it could be seen as a waste of time, all leisure activities can, if you only live to work and make money.

But, surely doing something that engages your mind either with puzzles or strategy, or just plain reactions is better than sitting in front of the 2 hour megasoap omnibus?
