A. Plenty of games with bad graphics come from average joe companies making uninspiring games just to make a quick profit. The majority of games with out-of-date graphics are the small, unknown games that no on ecares about.

B. Mirror's Edge was played for the platforming, not the graphics, which were not that good. Just a bunch of white with red mixed in here and there.

It seems these day's that the casual crowd is looking more into graphics of a game than the acual gameplay itself. Take Mirrors Edge for a moment, it had great graphics but the story was lacking and SOME of the platforming was buggy, plus it wasn't all that long. The point of the matter is that games thet may have lesser graphics can and usually are great games. Like Half-Life 2, it graphics were lacking a little bit (although it's about 5 years old) but the gameplay was solid and the phisic puzzles acually required you to gasp...think. Plus the story was great and it kept me going for a long time. And now here in 2009 I still play it and enjoy the game greatly even though the graphics are dated. The point is that a game doesn't have to be shiny to be good, just remember this before you buy your next Call of Duty or Halo. Please be honest about this topic, be harsh or agree I dont care.

PS. just dont correct and grammar mistickes because thats not the point.
When HL2 came out it had great graphics; its graphics are still fine. But I see your point. Graphics seem to much of a priority these days. But hey, Theyre still cool and I aint giving them up. They enhance our gaming experience *Shrugs* might as well keep 'em.

I'm 15.
Guys my age really don't care about how stupid/bitchy/annoying a girl is if she's hot.
Not sure how far the trend carries in life, just know that's how it is now.

The girl is a game.
The hotness is graphics.
The personality is the gameplay.

Thinking about it... this is a pretty shitty comparison.

Better graphics make for a better visual experience, people like that.

same as:

good graphics, lacking in gameplay, play it.

bad graphics, good gameplay, bugger that.

not so black and white in gaming but they're just different sides of the grey center.

People constantly condemn games with quality graphics because they have generic game play.

So your analogy falls flat on it's face.

Now, the source engine IMO still has solid graphical output (in HL2 and recently in TF2), it was partially rated so highly due to the graphics. I love good looking graphics. Granted, not as much as gameplay but it's good to make it look realistic. It's NOT good, however, to assume a game with good graphics will suck due to that, or to go all retrofag and gripe about how the "old games were best", when really that's just a chemical thingy in your brain that improves upon past experience making the present less amazing.

This day and age, sentences need good grammar and games need good graphics(I don't care about someone's grammar). But then wouldn't that mean bad grammar means bad gameplay!?

Games are a visual medium and graphics are the visual expression of a game. Well crafted visuals enhance the experience and help draw the player in. It's only natural that they are considered important. However, they may play a greater or smaller role in the overall experience. Some games rely more on the visuals to convey the atmosphere than others.

However, as I mention in every discussion about graphics, there is a big difference between technically advanced graphics and well designed graphics. To illustrate, I'll use two games: Crysis and Baldur's Gate 2. Crysis has one of the most advanced graphical engines to date. It is a powerhouse that makes machines cry. However, it's bland, uninteresting and doesn't really do anything with its engine. On the other hand, Baldur's Gate 2, a very old game, still features beautifully crafted environments that have stood the test of time despite the fact they are 2D.

To me, good visual design is very important. If I find the game unpleasant to look at, I'll have a hard time playing it. However, I don't demand the highest polygon counts and such.

I don't care for top of the line current generation graphics, I would prefer if game devs cut back graphics by 5 or so years and added more content/gameplay but because of people who think a game is bad when it does'nt have great graphics this will never happen.

Also sometimes I think some games hide behind good graphics to trick people into thinking the game is good, but if the graphics stipped away they would see it for what it is.

Since there is basicly the same conversation going in another post, i'm going to copy and paste my response.

I would like to say this right now, right here.

Graphics. Are. WORTHLESS.

Septerra Core > Any 3D Final Fantasy

Unreal > Haze (I absolutely refuse to beat the dead horse that is Halo any further)

Planescape: Torment > Star Ocean

Sorry, but there are threads like this all the time.

We all agree gameplay is more important than graphics, okay, let's shut up about it.
Just had to quote this quack because he is right on the money!

The thing is, everyone is different, and so is their views on things which are good and bad. My brother can't play any old games anymore because he is put off by the old graphics, but to me, graphics don't mean shit!
