People grind to make the game easier or they lack the necessary strategy to beat bosses. Comment number 15 is a good example of this as he didn't know really know the bosses weaknesses. If you know the game and strategy you can exploit things without being game breaking. In FFX I won all my fights with Aeons because I made Yuna into a tank type character like Auron. In FFVIII I won nearly all my boss fights with Meltdown-Aura-Renzokuken-Pulse Ammo. With FFVII Ultima/Demi/Comet + Quadra Magic. Although some people like me use it for insurance against the games normal bosses and to try and fight the secret bosses.
how did you do that???
Use the Expert Sphere grid and send Yuna down the general area/path Auron would follow. Simple really any character can be any type of character limits aside. For example you could have a full team of black mages or Paladin like tanks(ie my Yuna) or Ninja type(combo of Tidus and Rikku with a bit of Lulu for evasion). Amazing what you can do with the Expert sphere grid.

Because it's fun to to get so strong you are almost Godlike.
Also, Disgaea is notorious for having uber-levelled super-bosses.

EDIT: Maybe I'm a bit OCD as well...
All of the above (though I take the Disgaea statement from a friend, I can never play it because I hate grid battle systems.) In the Persona games, grinding saves you ALOT of hassle in bosses which can be extremely taxing and that games punishes those who don't take enough time to prepare themselves brutally. Grinding is always a wonderful time killer when you need to wait two or three hours to do something and you want to do at least --something-- productive with that time.

I guess it's the satisfaction of your hard work going into levels. Personally, I hate grind and I hate seeing it emerge in the FPS genre as well.

Grinding is subjective to each person, some people hate it, some people love it, and some people don't notice it.

A good game will have you grinding for hours without you realizing you are grinding :)
Off topic, but right now I really, really want to steal your avatar.

I should get a cup to place all those nickels I'm getting...

And yes I know, it's the reason I made it into my avatar when I saw it :)

To me, certain games create appeal in grinding by either periodically rewarding you with cool new abilities or simply making the actual combat in the game fun and engaging. Honestly though, I can only think up a handful or so of games that I'd be willing to grind in.

the main reason why i stopped playing WoW was the incessant grinding. it just got really really boring after a while and theres no getting away from it.

I need to grind with them, so I can understand them, and the power that's inside.
That sentence brought up some very disturbing imagery.

Except that the whole point of most Nippon Ichi [http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/NipponIchi] games is to get to those absurd power levels. Hell, in Disgaea 3 even a level 9999 character with maxed out items still isn't strong enough to survive some enemies' attacks.(those enemies have tens of millions in their stats) The only way to survive is to grind items and get higher stats than the enemies so you can kill them before they kill you.
Hmm...Well,I was ignorant of that fact. But I heard of some potentialy game-breaking mechanics in that game, like certain tiles making you immortal, and tossing a high level/rank Prinny is equivalent to lobbing a Holy Nuclear Hand Grenade of Antioch at the opponent. Junction that with damage boost tiles... BTW,all this info was pulled from a friend who plays a Disgea game on a DS.

can someone please explain the appeal in grinding? I have a friend who logged over 200 hours in Disgea three and can one-shot every opponent in the game with every character... I enjoy Disgea as much as the next JRPG fan... for the story, why anyone would go on without exposition or backstory motivation is beyond me... help me out Escapist nyoro~!
We here frown on gimmicks and signature related things. We only allow it when it's actually constructive to the conversation (see: Jack and Calumon). We get pissed off when it's just a useless gimmick that pointlessly seeks to differentiate people from the herd, without actually differentiating people from the herd (see: Bass kid, your nyoro~ stuff).

Seriously, cut that shit out.

OT: I've clocked up more than two months play time in WoW. I know my way around a good grind.
I'm kind of new here but how does writing the word Nyoro at the end of a sentence harm the discussion in the forum? I can understand hating the giant picture signatures I've seen elsewhere but come on, it's a word at the end of a sentence. Being dickish about a word is really, really just not necessary.
It's not the word itself, it's the principle behind the word. As I mentioned before, it's a gimmick, and if it doesn't add to the discussion, it's a pointless way to try and distinguish yourself without having to put the effort in for good posts. There is absolutely no point for it, and it's fucking annoying.
