Why has rock music (just rock) become so diluted and mainstream?

I was just watching tv and realised that My Chemical Romance and (god help us) Kings of Leon are whats known as solid rock these days. Bunch of untalented misanthropes that make me cringe like a mudcrab hanging off the end of my balls. Why cant rock bands these days go, hmm Jimi Hendrix was good, lets draw from his style and create our own at the same time, something that incorporates good vocals and talented musicianship. New Zealand rock music is so bad its not funny. Now 80's and early 90's rock was good don't get me wrong, I'm not just a die hard Hendrix fan, but christ, Panic at the Disco, and Nickelback (were good, now shit), and (FUCK SAKE) Hinder are known as 2000's hit bands :( Damn shame, anyway what you guys think? (Long Live Rage, Long Live Morello and Hendrix :D)

Computers.

Basically back in the day there just weren?t that many record companies because having the proper staff/industrial aspect/recording tools was not a good investment.

There are so many different bands out there with their music on the internet or a small record company there is pretty much anything you can think of out there.

And according to statistics I just made up for every 1 out of 13 people is/was/will be/pretends they?re involved in a band.

Hold on... you think that 80s and early ninetys rock was good?
Well as much as I agree that modern rock has kicked the bucket, I can't think of any good albums that came out during the eighties apart from those that came from the gods that were Dire Straits.

Edit: Oh and unless you just have an odd hatred for that specific country's music for some reason, I welcome the presence of another New Zealander on this most fanstastic of forums.

Out of all those you mentioned I only register Pink Floyd as decent, though their stuff in the eighties was nowhere near as good.

I think you'll find that the reason it seems that good rock music is gone to hell is that the stuff you hate is popular right now, so it's going to be in the limelight. While the stuff you like is hidden somewhere inside bars and clubs.

Changing yes, But for the good? I can't say yes to that.
this is why i go underground to source my music to stay away from what music has become in the mainstream because underground you can usly find a band that are in it for the music not the money are are good at what they do

Yeah... If you wan't good music, stay the hell away from MTV, C4, all of the Juice channels and almost every radio station. if you can get reception for it try Radio Hauraki, it's mostly the old, good stuff.

Note, this post contains many references to New Zealand Music tv channels and Radio stations that you others probably haven't heard of, pay no heed to it

Because what is rock, is not actually rock. It's sub-par bands, produced to the extent they all generate the same sound. The bands are taken and forced out the same way pop singers are, they are aimed at a particular market and then squeezed for all the cash they can get.

The exact same formula that has been used for pop music for decades, is being applied to rock, with much the same results.

Teenagers buying into these shitty scenes is where the blame lies.

Good rock is still very present, you just need to know where to look.

Music's totally subjective, and I'm of the belief that one shouldn't just restrict themselves to listening to only one genre of music. Rock, like all music, goes through trends according to the prevalent tastes of the times. This is why, after the huge success of My Chemical Romance and, eurgh, Fallout Boy we've got emo bands flooding the rock scene.

Whilst I don't mind My Chemical Romance (Black Parade's one of the best Rock albums of the past few years imo,) there are so many other superior bands that can be lumped together under the blanket term 'rock'. Gogol Bordello, Mindless Self Indulgence, The Living End, Avenged Sevenfold, Biffy Clyro, Muse, Reuben...

There's still lots of great rock bands out there, you just need to look away from the mainstream to find the bands that you want to listen to. Or just look for the good stuff in the mainstream. Simple as that.

The problem with the term 'rock music', as Strafe so well said in the above post, is that it's used nowadays to mean any type of music that falls in the gaping crevasse between boy-band-pop and insane-screaming-metal music. If you're going to complain about rock music, then that's an awful big range of bands that you don't like - so what'll it be? Mainstream rock, heavy rock, soft rock, pop rock, punk rock, rock ballads, folk rock, emo rock, goth rock, alternative rock... the list goes on and on.

Personally I can't stand what you'd call 'mainstream rock' at the moment - bands like MCR, nickelback (who were once great), Panic at the Disco - but there's so many alternatives out there that we're spoilt for choice!

Subjective? Perhaps. But honestly, I think it changes to whatever the marketing executive wants. Being able to use MTV to tell kids what they want helps, too.

Generally, whatever makes the most money is what they want to put out.

Well I'm fairly sure you lose your ability to comment by calling Nickleback good (at any point) and complaining about the Kings of Leon.

"Rock music" isn't a single genre. Almost all music is a direct product of our times, and it tends to get better when there's some kind of social unrest. At the moment there's just social boredom which has lead to naval gazing emo-rejects dominating the spectrum

As for good ol' rock music in it's biggest sense you seem to be forgetting Muse.

If you don't like whats current, go back and find the classics. Or search the underground, that's where innovative msuic comes from. You don't have to listen to MTV all the time

Another classic rock purist not wanting to let of the 'good times'?

The fact it that music changes. There will always be good music and bad music, you just have to look at it from a different angle and not expect everything to be jimi hendrix before you can see things the way the are.
