Why Have 4 Player Co-op Games Been Disappearing?

Because it takes effort, time and money to properly incorporate splitscreen. The developers have become so lazy they just don't want to bother doing it.

Borderlands is a good, recent, 4 player Co-op
READ THE DARN THREAD. BORDERLANDS ONLY HAS 2 PLAYER OFFLINE CO OP.

I CAN SOUND SMART IF I TALK IN CAP LOCKS TOO, IT'S CRUISE CONTROL FOR COOL AFTERALL!!

On the matter... I play Borderlands online like everyone else, and online it has 4-play Co-Op.
Oh shush I'm not mad at you, but HOW ARE PEOPLE NOT GETTING THAT BORDERLANDS IS NOT RELEVANT TO THIS THREAD? I know that it has 4 player online co op, but I'm not talking about online co op. I'm talking about offline co op!

Is this what's getting people?

And one last thought: Yes I'm aware that music games still have plenty of this, and me and my friends DO play these with 4 players, and it IS awesome. But I'm talking more about shooters.

Unfortunately a main reason split screen co-op is no longer as prevalent in gaming today is because the demographic of people who play video games has changed. All of us who grew up playing Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, and Turok: Rage Wars are still playing video games, and we don't always have the time to grab our controllers and go play a round of "Slappers Only" at a friend's house. We do however, have time to sit down, log online, and play. Yes it is a way for developers to cut corners and make money with online accounts, but I know I am lucky if I can get one day in the week where I'm gaming with other people in the room (either console or LAN), so I use online co-op far more often.

The most painfully obvious reason is processing. consoles just can't process the high end graphics of today with the amazing amounts of realism on four seprate screens simultaneously. It just can't work that well. Halo will lag a little, especially when too much happens at once, and it's graphics aren't top of the line. Good, but not top. The most annoying is you're limiting this to co-op. there are a nice amount of competitive, but the largest problem with co-op is it brakes the game. Have you done Halo on legendary with 4-people? It's easy street. Hell, i srewed around most of the time and made my friends do everything and we still had no problems. By yourself? Annoying bullshit. Then there's the money and lazy developers, but that feels more like a cop out. And to the people saying "the screen is too small", i say fuck you right in the gums. Screens are larger and more defined now then they've ever been before EVER. if i played 4 player split screen at my friends house on his TV, it's still larger and better definied then the TV i play on NORMALLY! So you people need to shut the hell up. It makes me sad that four player offline seems to be fading as a whole, because it's a lot more fun to play with my friends in the same room with each other then over a very alienating headset. the only offline 4-player that came out recently is Halo 3 and MW2... for shooters anyway. There is always Rock Band.

Well, Halo 3 kinda has a 4-player split screen co-opish online multiplayer mode. I love that feature.
he's talking about offline co-op.

OT:

Yeah, I've noticed this and it does sorta piss me off sometimes. I just don't really get why it can do splitscreen with two people, and the map can obviously handle 4 cause it can online, but they won't let me play with four
I know. But you can still play 4 player split screen online play. Like Team Death match.
I don't care to play co-op online, and I don't have live in the first place.

Microsoft wants to push xbox live and prevent people from not buying another console and another copy of the game.

Same reason why there aren't any games with bots.

EDIT: I stand corrected. It seems one company is defying Microsoft and giving us Bots.

Hurrah for EPIC games!!!!!

So my new question is, name one company besides EPIC that's giving us games with multiplayer bots.
Hurrah for them indeed!

either the frame rate takes it up the ass from the splitting of the screen(don't ask how, i'm just theorising.)
Not really, as each screen is at a lower resolution than a normal full screen, which I'd guess makes up for the rendering of more stuff.

because 4 player split screen looks crap on consoles which is the bigger hardware on the market.
