Short answer: No CD, No Serial.
I've owned The Sims 3 for a long time, but long since lost my serial number, and my CD is iffy at best. Previous attempts to retrieve it led to a page that said they charge ten bucks if you lost track of your serial number. I was miffed and cried foul, that some corporate dunderhead had invented a rather despicable way of charging extra money.
But today I tried again, and the Origin app worked very much like Steam. It had my serial number on record, I could re-install from a download, and best of all I didn't have to depend on locating my CD every time.
A lot has been made of information privacy, and I agree that handling info needs to mature as a process; what is proper behavior in that venue.
But I for one am quite glad that I can play the Sims without a CD/Serial process. Because my CD is a scratchy mess that I don't wanna go digging for, and I've long since lost my serial.
So thank you Origin for signing on to a better way.
