Why I Love Spider-Man
And why you might feel the same way
I shall make this clear, and obvious in case a few people have not gotten it by now. I love Spider-Man. It is a passive, stalker-type love, with me merely making a passing glance and taking a few pictures, then sneaking off and holding the pictures to my heart.
But why?
Simple.
Nerd = Hero
Yes, there are countless many other heroes that we can sympathize with, those that we can really get behind (Who doesn't love Rorschach?), but Spider-Man is also Peter Parker. Peter Parker is a nerd, and I am proudly one as well.
But it's the nerdiness of him that makes him so great. He finally has the power to make a difference, to be a hero, to be someone great and bold, and it's empowering to us, the readers, when we get behind him, when we root for him, because for all we care, he's exactly like us.
Except he can crawl on walls.
Another reason why I love him so...
Morality
Let us face the facts, when you're a kid or teen, you'll probably have one of those teachers or special people that will come into your classroom and tell you to take responsibility for your actions, to be nice to others, and to try and do good things. But you didn't listen. It was too formal to be taken in seriously, and thus you ignored it. But then you read comics, you read all sorts of comics, and you always eventually come up across the first Spider-Man one, or at least it's basic story... We all remember Uncle Ben. The proud man he is. We remember how he was killed too. He was killed because Peter didn't take responsibility. When you're a small kid, reading what seems to be an innocent comic about a man who is like a spider, and that comes up... it hits hard. You suddenly realize that you must be accountable for everything.
The Movies Are Cool Too
While they are no where near as good as "Batman Begins", "The Dark Knight", "Watchmen", and "V for Vendetta" when it comes to comic book films, you have to admit that the Spider-Man movies are actually pretty good. Yes, even number 3, although that was a bit... stupid at some parts.
At the end of the day, this is merely just a nerdy rant about a childhood hero.
