As a vegetarian, I could not give the most minute of f-k's whether anyone on this board is vegetarian. But - here comes the 'but' - using bad arguments to make yourself feel better is something I cannot abide.

If you have never had the slightest bit of compassion for an animal and would deep fry a kitten as soon as pet it - congratulations!! You're a horrible monster. But you are at least logically consistent, and that's something to hang your hat on.

If you love your pet to death and still wolf down hamburgers, just admit that you play favorites and stop BSing yourself. I think most people would rather a few humans die half a world away than have to deal with the passing of their family pet. Humans are selfish by nature, we value our own and disown those who aren't close to us. This is at least as true for other humans as it is for animals. This isn't something to be ashamed of, but it is something to be upfront with.

If you don't have love and compassion for all sentient beings quite yet, that's alright. Don't be hard on yourself, just be honest.

Depends, I eat free-range, but I am against cruel farming practice. If the animal is being given a decent life, then I'm fine with eating it, I love meat.

But if it is a "pet animal" that society has brought up as pet, not livestock, then I have problems.

Most of the livestock animals alive today would not be were it not for us eating them, and they wouldn't get comfortable lives (admittedly shorter), or as much food, or guarantee of more being born to continue the gene. So in those regards, I am all for eating meat, we are omnivorous after all.

Confused argument is confused.

As you say, we're not animals; we're capable of far more cruelty and compassion than any other creature can bring itself to do, and we are aware of that. Some people care, others don't.

You (after saying the rules don't apply, lol) say that because animals are killed in the wild that it's fine for us to kill in captivity, right? But you do realise that sometimes humans get killed in the wild - is it therefore fine to kill humans?

Also, what of the animals not normally bred for food in the West - would you eat your pet dog or cat, even in a non-crisis situation? What about horse meat, if you found it on the shelf of a supermarket? If you have qualms about either of those scenarios then you're being hypocritical in that on the one hand you denounce those with ethical qualms about slaughtering and eating living animals whilst on the other having ethical qualms about slaughtering and eating living animals.

Anyway, I'm fine eating meat. I accept where it comes from and aim to avoid meats that I feel are procured unethically or at too high an environmental cost (veal, beef etc). That said, students can't really afford free-range chicken all the time, sometimes compromise is necessary. But at least I'm aware of it...
I dont have a problem with Horse meat, as for eating dogs, while Ill admit Im not comfortable with it, people do do it, so yeah Im not out to ban them

Im just saying that if animals can eat animimals..then we should be ablw too as well

as for farming practices..that a whole other issue

b) I don't feel bad in the slightest.
please picture-google "butchering" - you soon will.
I already said I've seen animals die in front of me[footnote]In fact, one time there was an accident and I saw the a sheep get its head caught in the deck of a lorry when it was being raised, which crushed its skull and pushed its eye from its socket. So I've seen more gruesome things than most hardcore vegetarians.[/footnote], that has no effect on me at all.
They're just walking sandwiches to me.

I don't feel bad about it because our animals have a pretty damn cushy life. They get to graze in the open, they have all their food given to them so they never go hungry, and they get shelter for the winter.

I'll say beforehand that I'm not trashing vegetarians or vegans, people dont eat meat for a whole bunch of reasons and they have every right too

but heres the reason I think its ok

Animals are dicks[/B]

no really thats why, let me explain

I think when we see animals, we admire them and also see human traits in them (ohh those lion cubs are playing! cute!!) which is also why you see talkign animals in...well alot of things

but heres another thing, I thourght that mabye we are also in a way applying human empathy and morality to animals, and nature as well

which simply doesnt work

because most of us accept that animals kill each other in the wild, we accept it as fact, in fact animals dont just kill each other, they mutilate and maim each other in horrible ways that would most of us recoil in horror...just take birds for example http://www.cracked.com/article_19263_the-6-most-disturbingly-evil-birds.html (gotta love cracked)

My point is that you cant apply the same rules we use for humans to animals, why is a cow slaughtered in a sloughter house any different to a calf getting mauled to death by wolves?

because one is "nature" therefore its ok, but because its US the other one isnt, the way I see it if youre going to stop US eating meat, why not stop a lion? (actually PETA thats a challenge..really try and do that please!)

Now I do want to say I DO NOT belive that we should cause harm to animals for no good reason, as humans in a way we are custodians of the earth and should respect the animals..and all that jazz, so no I dont belive in animal cruelty (as in homless animals, people abusing animals, or being inhumae with their dealings with them)

I guess its really the animals groups that Im annoyed with, they act is if animals are thease inocent angels who would never hurt a soul

animals dont have morals, animals are not like us, liek dolphiins everyone loves dolphins right? well they also kill porpises for fun

in other words nature is a *****
this is too much stupid arguments to be left aside! By the power of Gray Skull!

Animals are dicks[/B] yes they are dicks for .... using their brains to get the food they like to eat? or for self-preservation like those human that commited cannibalism wtf! cracked wtf?

animals dont have morals, animals are not like us, liek dolphiins everyone loves dolphins right? well they also kill porpises for fun[/B]

yes like humans do. like killing and infant with a friggin brick.

or beheading a dozen birds, spearing a frog just for fun

or letting children and handicapped people to die in a forrest like in ancient greek or china nowadays.

or pouring gasoline on homeless people and lighting them on fire.

or raping people and murdering them.

the things with animals is that we used to look like we were the superiour race and animals are just tasty meatbags with no emotions or morals and its ok to kill and eat them.
but now we are learning that these dumb tasty things are not that dumb at all and are adapting to the things we do. like:
birds taking a farry to an island instead of flying there.
birds FISHING fish with bread crumbles or stealing cheetos from stores.
foxes trying to have fun on a trampoilne. or dogs and birds using the subway to get around faster.

she offers me her dog biscuits and toys for a spoon of my tasty pudding. and if i ignore her for a while she raises the dog bicuit amount.
and more hilarious if she thinks the ammount of pudding she gets is not enough for the ammount of biscuits she offered, she starts to yelp or even wanders off rumbling with all her biscuits.

also wolfes for example have morals like not beat someone of their own to death when they are on the ground and yielded before unlike us.

do your research! google animals and morals for gods sake!

and i know that dolphins like to rape some from time to time and chimpanzees friggin love war. and thats the point. if animals can be as much of a dick like us, they might feel like us.

and would you like to be raised in a box only to find yourself hung up in your teenage years with your throat slit and the taste of your own blood and the dick of someone else in your mouth slowly fading to death?

as for the mauling and ripping their meat appart. if they had hands or thumbs they would use forks and knives to eat. also to hunt us down with machine guns and pet us and occasionally eat us like we do.

the thing is that vegetarians rub the cruelty that some bored dicks in slaughterhouses do in your face and never stop to do that assuming using their products takes you to the same level as these psychos.
my argument was NOT "animals are mean, so therefore they deserve to be eaten" by that I was illustrating they are not gods inocent creatures...they just are what they are, it was merely a little joke

and yes animals are amazing creatures who can be smart and do all kinds of amazing things, but they are not people, they wouldnt have any qualms about ripping you apart, its called nature and she is a cold hard *****, not a loving mother

it seems youre painting (anromorphasising) animals out to be "better" than us morally they do not have morals, its instinct and intelligence, and your using that fact that humans are dicks (because thats news to us all) to prove...what exactally?

(oh by the way humans you know MOST of us arnt dicks, and really I feel people need to get off their moral high horse and stop denouncing us all based on the actions of a few)

I will say that I love my dog and most of the time I wouldnt feel right about killing an animal without good reason

taking farming practices out of the issue I so no problem with eating animals who are bred to be eaten

But why would you become a vegetarian? Why restrict yourself with a specific set up guidelines by associating with a label when you could just eat less meat whenever you pleased?

You gave some big picture reasons for an entirely personal decision. You aren't big picture, you aren't large scale, you're one person with knowledge of big picture but not any realistic influence over it. I don't mean to attack you, but I'm curious what your other reasons are.
I guess it's mostly ideological. I realise that mass consumption of meat is harmful to both humans and the animals we eat, and while I know that me not eating meat has no effect whatsoever on meat production (or the environment or the well-being of these animals), I simply don't like the idea that I'm part of the problem. I'm firmly convinced that meat production should be severely limited, by international law if necessary, and I'd feel like a hypocrite if I would declare that idea while still eating meat daily.

Actually I learned in school that we got to where we are today as a species because we ate meat while similar counterparts that were vegitarians all died out apperently over time the meat helps out brains develop better

People are dicks too. Does that mean it's ok to slaughter them?

Your argument is baseless.
thats not my argument

Im not saying they deserve to be eating because they are dicks

Im saying the fact that they get eaten is nature,as in, in the wild its not all meadows and rainbows

and we arnt even eating wild animals, we are eating animals bred specifically for the purpose, nature guided by us

But i think vegetarianism has plenty of benefits for humans, regardless of what anyone thinks of the animals at all.

Efficiency, for one. It takes a large amount of grain to produce a relatively small amount amount of meat. If we ate less meat, we could feed A LOT more people. It'd be much better for the environment too.

Meh, I'm a vegetarian. Ate all kinds of meat, didn't really like it, found you can get the same nutrition from non-meat.

And meat's expensive = bad for me as a student ;)

Same here. I mean really, we are omnivores. We eat both meat and plants. It's how we are supposed to be. Sure, we have gotten to a point where through modern trade and shipping we have enough easily accessed alternatives to abandon our meat-eating ways, but I don't want to. I love meat, and meat is always going to be here, so I don't see why I should give it up and miss out on such a tasty part of the human experience.

lol You got any idea how not vaguely even pretending to be logical the whole "It's nature" arguement is? Have you seen how wild hominids behave? Do you behave the same? If we have the ability to choose not to go with our "Nature", and natural animals are dicks, then maybe the hole in your non arguement is that, unlike animals, you get a choice and still act like a dick?

BTW this is all from an omnivore, I'm just okay with knowing I lack the ability at present to alter my diet. I know what I'm doing isn't optimal and I cope. The urge to prove your actoins right and good has outstripped your ability to reason methinks...
well I have also hated the "its nature" argument in raltion to alot of other unlrelated stuff (gayness for one)

all Im saying is if we are humane as possible about it, I see no reason why its wrong to eat animals bred for the purpose of being eaten

make your mind up :p
1. we require protein and the nutrients found in meat, we have teeth for it and are able to digest it, we LOVE meat, so whats wrong with eating it?

2. a wolf goes out and kills a baby deer, thats nature, thats how it must work

a woman goes out and kills a little girl, that woman is a psychopath and a threat to society

I've been thinking about this quite a bit over the past few years and have come to the following conclusions:

1. Eating meat is perfectly fine. Our bodies are set up to accomodate eating meat and expect nutrients that are most commonly found in meat. People have been eating meant since the dawn of time and other creatures are happily eating meat.

2. People in western countries eat too much meat, often with meat being a part of almost every meal. We don't need to eat as much meat and eating too much meat can have negative effects on our health. Sure, meat brings some needed nutrients (which CAN be found elsewhere, but it's a hassle), but we don't need to binge on it. Having meat be a part of one meal a day is more than enough. Personally, I eat meat 2-3 times a week and I try to make it fish if I can.

3. If we're going to eat meat, we should treat animals that provide it with a modicum of respect and provide them with decent accomodation for their short stay on this planet. No need to be dicks to creatures who die so we can live. Also, this eliminates the whole "cruelty to animals" argument, or at least most of it.

4. We'll have to eat less meat. Producing meat is more resource intensive than producing plat-based food. It's less efficient, requires much more ground area, etc. As we are starting to run low on space on the planet, meat will simply be too inefficient to produce, especially on the level that some people are accustomed to (see 2.). Meat will still be available, but it will be less readily available and more expensive.

If not eating meat made us healthier, then we wouldn't have evolved canines.

We are capable of both compassion and cruelty. Many animals are not capable of either, save for direct human interference.

Protein can come from many sources, but specific amino acids (which make proteins) can not.

Hormones in meats are essential for proper human development.

A high starch diet is worse than a high fat diet. (I.e: Meat is healthier than grain)

I am against killing dogs, cats, and horses (etc.) for food because they were not born or bred for food. If they were, then alright.

Cruelty towards raising an animal for slaughter is wrong. Cruelty in killing is wrong. Raise the animal in relative comfort (more than they'd have in the wild, having lived on a farm for a good part of my life I can say this was the case there) and kill it quickly.

If we didn't raise animals for slaughter, then we'd have to hunt them in the wild, which I think would be much more cruel than domestic raising. Not to mention we'd drive them to extinction.

I am going to prioritize my health and well being over the life of an animal, no matter how cute it is.

If anyone wants to be vegetarian or vegan, go nuts. I can't stop you, nor would I waste my time trying to.

That being said, you do not gain any moral standing above me because you refuse to eat meat.
