Darkness is an odd thing. It moves at the speed of light (logically and according to QI, unless a physics buff can correct me) and is completely incorporeal, yet we can't see through it. As a species who relies on sight so much, and who have relatively good visual receptors as compared to other mammals who may only see in reds and greens, not being able to see must be rather unnerving. So kudos to people who can't, but I'll be taking me torch!

It's not the darkness that's scary, it's what's in the darkness.

The great unknown.

Every species in the universe has an irrational fear of the dark - except it's not irrational...

...it's Vashta Nerada.

EDIT: Ninja'd. Curses.

Well, in the city that's when the drug addicts and shit come out, but everywhere else there's no reason to be afraid of the dark.

Humans rely heavily on eyesight, the darkness takes away one of your most valued senses, very good reason to be scared.

Personally i really enjoy a night time stroll every now and again, nothing but the cool air, no people, no noises apart from the quiet roar of random traffic and the strange orange glow emitted by millions of lights all of the country making sure that sky is never really black.

When you're in the dark, you can't see any potential threats. It's all about instincts, which dates back to when we were loping around the countryside hunting or defending our homes. I am, however, comfortable in the darkness. Just this evening i had to walk through town while it was dark, and I didn't have a problem with it.

I like the darkness. You can use it as a tool to hide yourself. It is human interaction in the dark that worries me. Then again, I don't like human interaction in the daylight either.

As a young woman with no real means to defend myself, I would never wander around the city after dark. This might change with more judo, though.

Probably because anything and/or anyone could be out there. Within reason, of course. Odds are I'm not going to get jumped by a puma in the edge of Wisconsin.

Honestly, I wasn't afraid of the dark until I played Fatal Frame when I was nine.

I'm still scared of the dark... and of old time cameras.
That is AWESOME! I need that game.

And honestly, I've never found darkness that scary, more calming than anything. Seriously, the post by HardrockSamurai shows that especially well, when looking at the picture, everything else turns painfully bright. I mean, sure, if it's dark, there could be anything out there, and you don't know. When illuminated, it IS there. When it's dark, at least there's a chance it isn't.

Now that might stem from the fact that I've always embraced what I don't understand, and what is unknown. I guess I can see why some people would find the unknown scary, and I can certainly see why we did earlier in our societal development, but for me, understanding new things, exploring that we which we don't understand, and trying out new experiences is what makes life worth living. I've always preferred chaos to order anyway. Always being in complete control is really boring.

The dark is scary because our primary sensory organs are our eyes. Fear is a survival instinct, and what you cant see can typically kill you. A fear of darkness isn't exactly irrational, it does have its uses, but nature doesn't account for some of its children rising up to master the world and thus some instincts are left as hold overs from an age where going blind meant death.

Nobody is scared of the dark, we've lived with the dark for centuries. What we are afraid of, is what lurks within it.

Anyway, the dark doesn't bother me, my biggest phobia is signing for things. I hate those damned dotted lines!
How scared would you be if you had to sign a document in the dark?

Almost every species in the universe has an irrational fear of the dark, but they're wrong, because it's not irrational. It's Vashta Nerada.
What's "Vashta Nerada?"
It's what's in the dark. It's what's always in the dark.

Count the shadows...
