Why is it always subs over dubs?

Now I know I'm in the minority here, but I prefer my anime dubbed over being subtitled. And no, it's not because I'm too lazy to read the subtitles along with the shows, I have watching plenty of subbed anime in my time.

What I don't understand is the huge push to watching anime subtitled than in English. I could understand back when anime was first appearing over here in the West, we had some pretty bad VOs back then, but now, there is really no excuse for it. We have a few Western Anime companies going, who for the most part, are releasing and dubbing over a lot of the material that is coming out of Japan, most of it being high quality stuff.

It just kind of irks me when seeing bits of my favorite shows on youtube or other video sites, and the common concensus is "Hey, you REALLY need to check out the sub of this show. Dubs? what kind of a tard watches those?".....especially when most of stories or settings make more sense when dubbed over. (I don't care what anyone says, the accents may not be incredible, but Hellsing makes a lot more sense and is more immersive in English than in Japanese)

So...now that my little rant is over, why do you fellow Escapists prefer subs over dubs? and what made you switch over? (from dubs to subs, or from subs to dubs)

I won't speak for other people, but personally I prefer to get the anime in it's purest form, and the closest thing I can get to that without teaching myself japanese and watching it raw is to find anime subbed. It allows me to get the purest, original experience and watch the anime how it's originally intended on being watched. That's why whenever I watch my anime, I look for subs first and foremost.

It's because the average Japanime fan feels something will be lost if they listen to it in a language they understand. They feel like if any whiteys touched it, it will be impure.
I don't get that whole "Voice acting quality" complaint, because Japanese voice acting has never been particularly good.

Euhm I prefer dubs really, and the majority probebly doesn't like dubs because they're usually terrible :/

It depends on the quality, but really, which ever I see first is usually what I prefer. Unless one of the characters is from Osaka. That super southern accent they always use annoys me.
Ouran High School Host club though, I watched first subbed, but then since it was on FUNimation, I got used to and now enjoy the dub.

I'm with you on this one. I tend to prefer dubs over subs (though if it's even a mediocre dub I'll watch the sub instead). For example; I prefer the Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann dub over the sub, because the voice acting is quite well done. Yet I constantly get judged because I prefer dubs.

Ah whatever, I should just learn Japanese, that'd make everything easier.

Some are better in dubs, some aren't. Dragonball Z is only good in dubs. Full Metal Alchemist is only good in dubs. Full Metal Panic is good in either. Bleach is only good in subs. It all depends.

No matter the anime, I'll watch it dubbed not subbed. If I wanted to read anime, I'd pick up a manga.

The only Anime that has marginally tolerable English voice acting is Cowboy Bebop. That's why I prefer all subs.

Because it keeps it truer to the creator's original vision...and it's cheaper. They would have to find a brand new cast of voice actors or original voice actors who are bilingual and match the type of voice that they are looking for to match with the characters but I believe that would also raise their costs. It's simply easier and cheaper to add subs.

Yeah, I really prefer dubs too. Subs are fine and all, but the Japanese voice acting isn't necessarily any better than the American voice acting, and sometimes it's a lot worse, e.g. FLCL.

I dont really watch anime but I can say from watching other films that dubs are usually horrible.

I tend to watch dubbed since when its anime time, drinking is involved and being drunk is no good for reading. really it depends on how well the dubbing is. if its like this
then its dubbing all the way, in fact the dubbing was so good that in japan they released the american dub of it

I like both.
Dubbed because i like hearing things in my own language and the Voices can get pretty badass.

Subbed because its the closest to the original script i can get.
The Subtitles are usually closer to what is actually being said than what is said in a Dub.

Now sometimes its a big difference, sometimes its not.

That's why i love it when a Box Set has Duel Audio tracks.
Lets me try both and see which one i like better in the case THAT Anime.
