With the announcement of Goddess Dimension Neptunia coming out to America, we are getting another JRPG that only continues to reduce the already tarnished rep of Japan to a point that it is going to be even more taboo to discuss Japanese Culture on western shores. None of the games out so far have been getting even a decent review but they still press on in hopes of something will stick. Meanwhile SEGA and Bamco saw the futillity in winning over the western audience and packed their bags up and gone back home.

So why do they still bring games over here despite the lack of appeal while Capcom, Bamco and SEGA does not want our money?

I rather enjoy Nippon Ichi's games. All of them, from Zettai Hero Project: Unlosing Ranger vs Darkdeath Evilman to Disgaea to Makai Kingdom. Where else are you going to knock a giant demon through both the moon and the sun by smacking them with a giant horse dildo?

Not sure what you mean by 'tarnished rep of Japan' though. Are you referring to turn based strategy games? Or perhaps the recent feminism kick?

Edit: Now that I think about it, NIS made my favorite game of all time; Soul Nomad and the World Eaters.

"You may kill me, but I won't let you kill the baby!" Then you go and cut both of them down. Later in the game you kidnap an Angel to draw out his lover, then execute him in front of her when he tells her to never give up hope. There's also a Knight who is big into justice and peace, but you murder his son in cold blood and draft him into your army, which eventually drives him to insanity and causes him to brutally murder anyone who tries to come into your nation.

That's because none of their games are targeted towards the mainstream audience. It's a niche title and I'm pretty sure it does well otherwise the game wouldn't have gotten 2 sequels. Also reviewers are pants on head retarded and judge games based on if they liked them, not if they're good. If you don't like anime moe of course you would hate it, but the question should be if it's a good game for it's genre.

Though can't you just ignore it? It's not even like it has a huge presence like CoD.

I am just thinking, how much better would the God of War series be if they replaced Kratos with Gig.

I assume that you have yet to hear about Xenoblade Chronicles or The Last Story. Their both great games and you should check them out.

Soooo... you don't like NISA's games?
I personally love them, especially Disgaea. Many people do too. They have a certain sense of humour that is sorely lacking in games today.
And since when has SEGA packed up and gone home when they release Yakuza in the West too?
Also, please link a review which is not decent. As far as I recall, they're games get at least decent reviews, sometimes really good reviews.

I love NIS's style. In fact I'm currently scouring to find the Hyperdimension Neptunia games. They've got great humour and characters.
It's the gameplay I have trouble with. So far the only one I can play for a long time is ZHP since I don't have to worry about many characters and it's mechanics make it feel like playing a more strategic verison of Kirby.

NISA is feeling a niche that would otherwise be vacant, it doesn't take much cash to take these games and translate them into another so they can make easy money for selling next to nothing. Yeah sure, JRPG's have gone away of the Dodo but this hardly tarnishes the name, these barely get noticed.

Nippon Ichi games appeal to a niche in the west. A niche which I happen to be a part of. They've got a great sense of humour and are good all around. I don't know about you, but I've logged more than 200 hours into Disgaea 4 and loved it enough to shell out for DLC. There is no tarnishing of Japan's reputation. Besides, their games are niche enough that most people don't give them a second glance.

Personally, I'm looking for a copy of Hyperdimension Neptunia Mk 2. The first game suffered from awful gameplay, but had a great concept and good characters, and was pretty hilarious overall. I read that the second one fixed most of the battle issues, so I figure that it wouldn't hurt to give it a try. I also read that it amped up the fanservice, though, which I'm not too happy about, so I'm trying to get a reasonable deal on it.

There games are niche, not mainstream. Those other companies are big companies and expect big returns, NIS is a small company and supplies the niche which makes there small returns.

As far as "tarnishing the reputation of japan", the people who wouldn't like it probably aren't aware of it, and those who follow it probably don't care or like it. Don't assume to impose your cultural values on the rest of the world.

Well, the companies back home will think "DAMNIT THEY MUST HATE JAPAN IN GENERAL! CLOSE THE DOCKS! SHUT DOWN THE AIRPORTS! MAKE SURE NOTHING ELSE COMES OUT OF JAPAN!)

The first problem I have with the OT is that they seem to assume that everything that comes out of Japan is a "JRPG." There are many, many games that are Japanese-Developed, but are not RPGs, and if you actually need me to lost them for you then you are hopelessly ignorant.

Last I heard, Bandai/Namco is still bringing "Tales of Xilia" over to America, so they have not "given up" on the JRPG in America yet.

I really have no idea what you mean by "tarnishing" the reputation of Japan, either. I mean, you would think that a country with a history of more than one thousand years could survive a few bad games being exported to America and Europe, but if you want to judge an entire nation by one small segment of its popular culture, then go ahead, but I do not want to hear you whining when Europeans accuse Americans of being shallow and uncultured because they watched 10 minutes of one episode of "Survivor."

I think you're trying to say something bad about NISA but I'm sure you're not right?
