Uh, I've not ever had a game crash on me from Steam. Ever. And I've got like a library of over fifty games.
I'm under the impression that it is your computer and just that.

Fallout 3's worst one patch 1.5, broke the shit out of mods. One of the earliest ones broke missile targeting in VATS, and it was never fixed.

NV broke some sounds and companion behaviors, but luckily nothing as major as 1.5 for FO3.

Problems with Skyrim's 1.2 patch were fairly widely reported, including here.

Could be a bit of a wild and "out there" suggestion so feel free to completely ignore it and continue preaching about the ills of Steam, but have you ever considered disabling the auto-update feature in the game preferences? Just a thought.

My biggest complaint about Steam would undoubtedly be the lack of a mobile app, I know this is going to change soon so I am a happy camper overall... except for the massive backlog thanks to the sale meta-game. Damn.

Never had a problem with Steam in that way. If something like that is happening, more often than not it's on the user's end of it.

Here's how I view Steam:

The Good: Sales, obviously, also the whole download and install your games on any computer thing is kinda the way I think software in general should be. I bought a license for myself, why shouldn't I be able to take it wherever I want?

The Bad: Having to start the damn thing, having its crap in the background whenever I'm playing, and goddamned auto-updating.
Agreed about both. Only on Steam have I ever found Skyrim, a big budget 60$ game for 40$.

Didn't matter anyway though; got it as a gift. Free Skyrim. :D

OT: My personal thoughts, Steam is great. Sure, the auto-updates kinda suck and sometimes my Source engine games are unreliable, but sales are what make Steam excellent. I got Just Cause 2 for just 5 dollars on it, and I haven't had a better sale than that since.

Listen guys, I tried playing Frozen Synapse, Deus Ex invisible wars(rather not speak of that), TF2 and Sniper elite. Surprisingly TF2 and sniper elite work well while frozen synapse would not budge. And yeah Deus ex worked but it's one of the few times where I wouldn't have mind steam to go banana's. I mention those games because those are the last 4 I tried to play in the last week.

Steam is no longer 'bad' in my eyes. Steam has been great for the past few years.

Now back in about 2002 and me and my friends played Counter Strike, that was shit.

Are you sure it's Steam and not your PC?

You see, steam checks the network every time you start a game too, and heaven help you if you have internet when you shut down your computer, but you don't when you start it back up.
That happens all the time with me, it just prompts me to reboot Steam in offline mode and I can just game on.

Goddamned auto-updating?
Every time a patch is released for any game have installed, it downloads automatically.

How... how is that a bad thing?
Because updates can and do break shit. I don't want them until they've been vetted by braver souls in the community. Let me tell you about some infamous Fallout 3, NV, and Skyrim patches....
You can turn auto-updating off.

But yeah.

I <3 Steam.

BUT NOT NEARLY AS MUCH AS ORIGIN TROLLFACE.JPG

Hah. Right.

To tackle your more direct points, I've seldom had games crash on me (even Skyrim). In fact, it's usually just Garrysmod, and usually just because I push the engine/my computer too far. Which is easy in that.

probably either hardwarde conflict or some sort of corruption in your operating system, or your internet connection has issues, try validating the install of each game you are having problems with might be one little corrupted file in there somewhere, never know.

I have well over 350 games on steam, all of them work fine.

The only times I've really had trouble with Steam have been due to the publisher trying to piggyback their own DRM on top of it.

And while were at it, what are good little games that don't require that much of a commitment. Like indie games such as supermeat boy, beatrunner or darwinia?

What kind of magic version of steam have you got? With me it asks if I want to go into offline mode, I tell it to, and then it refuses to start up anyway because it failed the DRM check -- and this has held true over two different computers. You have to either have Steam set to offline mode before you shut down the computer, or have Steam already running when you lose internet. Otherwise, you're SOL until you can find a network to connect to.

VVVVVV. Get it now if you don't have it and you like platformers at all; it's my personal game of the year for 2010.

Games really never crash on me, and I'm running on a middle of the road laptop. When I want to see if my computer will run it, I download a demo. If it doesn't start up, I know not to waste me money.

I can find ALMOST any game I want with steam but playing a game is always a gamble!! I swear I must have had at least 1 in every 4 games crash on me. Oh and thank god for those steam sales making game crashes less despairing to my wallet. So why is steam so damm unreliable?
I've never had any problem wit steam games, in fact when I couldn't get Morrowind to work on my PC, I got it through stem and it runs fine. Also there was one game, can't remember what now, but it was made for XP and didn't run on 7 and the company that made it were gone so Valve made an unofficial patch for it, steam is awesome.
