Why is texting/IMing considered impersonal?

Some of the most personal conversations I've had have been over text messages, and yet there seemed to be a lot of classmates in my psych class who thought texting/IMing was one of the worst ways to talk to a person. I found that I am more "me" when I'm TX/IM. I like how it gives you the ability to stop and think about what you are going to say. You can't talk on the phone then pause for 5 min. to collect your thoughts. I also prefer TX/IM because I HATE looking people in the eyes when I talk to them, which kinda puts people off. I feel I could tell someone how I really feel (love, hate, disgust etc.) better thru a text than I could face to face. Just because they can't see me or hear my voice doesn't mean I'm not 100% into the conversation. I know everyone has different preferences, I just don't think it's fair to say that certain conversations shouldn't be done in a particular way.

emailing and IM'ing I think is fine

texting however you are severly limiting your capacity to write and therefore express (dont get me started on "txt" speak "hhy babe do how r u? wat is dis? u mnd if i" <-you sound like an asshole and a retard!..../rant

..I get told by my sister I sounds annoyed/angry/stressed over text....I mean seriously??!

It's definitely the most efficient way of communicating short of talking face to face. If I ask a question through text message, I know I'll get a short, quick, straight up answer with all the bullshit cut out. Really the only downside is you can't hear the tone in someone's voice, which is important in certain kinds of conversations.

haha yeah I agree some text speak is hilarious. But I've gotten a 7 part text before because it was so long. I've done the whole "cya 2marrow" thing but when I'm having a serious conversation I spell everything out and use correct punctuation.

I dont know, as I said I find it annoying being limited, and Ive always found the act of text very tedious
