Why is the PS2 still around?

Let me just put up a disclaimer and say that I DO like the PS2. It's probably the best gaming system of all time for its incredible library and lifespan. That said, I'm still bewildered about how long it's managed to stay around. It was released in March, 2000 in Japan, meaning that it has officially been on the market for nine years. Just a couple weeks ago, Sony dropped the price a bit, bringing it down to a bargain 99.99.

So what do you has kept the PS2 going for so long? Is it Sony's continued support? The abundance and cheapness of games? Or the fact that parents are too cheap to buy one of the newer consoles and instead just fall back on the old Playstation? I have no idea.

I can't help feeling that you answered your own question with that one.

Because the PS2 is a fucking legend amongst consoles and deserves to live for centuries!

And also because it's still very profitable for Sony to produce. Don't fix what 'ain't broken.

Becuase not everyone can afford to buy a PS3 or 360?
There's loads of games for the next gen consoles that are on the PS2 I'm guessing. Not too sure.
The games are like £10 cheaper than they are for the PS3 or 360.

I still have mine, but I'm not gonna buy any more games for it.

There are a few reasons.

* It's cheap.
* It has a ton of good and cheap games.
* Sony is still manufacturing it.
* It doubles as a DVD player.
* It looks good:p

Because it prints money, that and because even though there aren't many games released on it these days, it has one of the best game libraries ever and presents a more affordable choice than the PS3.

One of the reasons I forgot to mention is the fact that games in Japan are just being released over here in the US due to various reasons. As you've all seen, Ultimate Ninja 4 is just being released in the US, after being out in Japan for at least a couple years, due to the English release of Shippuden coming out soon.

I remember reading somewhere that Sony guaranteed the PS2 a 10 year life span. Considering it came out in 2000, we should still see games for about a year. I'd also imagine its because the PS2 is still selling strongly, and I wouldn't be surprised if they keep making games for it even after the 10 years is up.

Because people are cheap. Same reason they buy the Wii over the XBox 360 and it over the PS3. Most people don't even know the difference between the systems, they just buy the system with the cheapest tag or what they were told by someone else to buy.

here's a few reasons:

Team Ico

God of War series

GTA series

Plus it is technically more reliable than the 360 and PS3 put together.

It has nostalgic value - I still go back to mine and play my old games; Lord of the Rings: the Two Towers, World Rally Championship 2004...

At least I would if it hadn't EXPLODED

Because sony took out backwards compatibility for the PS3 on the PS2, so I refuse to buy a paper weight when I can just use my PS2.

...Or the system with one of the largest game libraries in the history of video-games? I'm far from being finished with my PS2, so many fantastic games on it that I haven't touched. Additionally, Sony have probably prolonged the console's lifespan even further with their lack of support for the platform on the PS3.

I'm still buying games for my PS2, and so are many of my friends. For me, it's mostly old, good titles I haven't had the time to play due to work/life/etc, and there are so many of them to catch up on, I'll probably be buying them for a year or two to come in short purchasing bursts of 5-7 games each time.

I could buy a PS3... but why would I? I've still got all the entertainment I need out of my PS2, and I can't justify spending $350-400 on a system that has maybe 5 games I'd enjoy, especially since it can't play my PS2 games anymore. Removing backward compatibility to lower costs, while understandable from the "stop the bleeding!" point of view, is lame imo. I would've probably bought one when my PS2 eventually dies just to keep my game library from being effectively extinct, but there'd be no point now, so I'll likely buy another PS2 instead.

tl;dr version: I agree, you answered your own question.
It's probably the best gaming system of all time for its incredible library and lifespan.
