Because it's fun and there are a lot of people. It's an awesome game to play with friends and can be very satisfying if you're big on starting with fuck all and becoming super awesome. All in my opinion, of course.
I don't really know. I was playing for a couple of months, (not the sort of person who spends at least 10 hours a day sat at their PC spamming AOE spells) but then just got bored and moved on. But hey, its different for everyone. If you're not sure, download the trial version.
Because ALOT of people think it's good. And it probably is, in some ways. Having only played it infrequently, I cannot pass personal judgement.

I realize its the popular question, due to the influx of new MMOs recently. WoW is popular due to how long its been around, they do a lot of things right (technical things), and it's based on a subject that many can relate too. Lots know about elves and orcs.
While on the other hand, it also does so many things different! Draenei and orcs portrayed in a 'positive light' are unique to the game. And it branches out to SciFi elements as well as classic. So there's something for everyone.
