The dog is also interesting because he changes breed during the game. Each time you travel to a new world your dog changes his look to a different breed

I don't think a toaster with legs counts as a breed. That aside, I couldn't agree more. This has to be one of my favorite games, and I always felt bad when the dog hit 0 HP. In every other RPG, it was just "Meh. Healing item time."

I can see why this is so rare in games though. It's hard to grow attached to a character that can't talk.

I agree that this game was high, high quality. One of my childhood favorites. Being a dog person IRL, I couldn't help but keep a large supply of dog treats in my inventory in case he fell.
