Why (most) people hate Vegemite

My physics teacher brought some to class for Australia day. I gave it a try and thought it was okay. However, I refuse to believe this is vegetable-based when It very clearly is a blended meat paste.

As an Australian I have. It's alright though because of a medical condition in early life I was put on a no added salt/low salt diet. So I wasn't allowed to eat it. Now that I can I don't bother. I buy lots of no added salt or low salt products still.

I've always had Promite, always. It's just a far superior spread (in my opinion).

I agree Promite is the better of the two, probably because it's milder so you can put more on to actually enjoy the flavor. (when the mood takes you that is)

Also, I mistrust processed food as a rule.

I have never tried Vegemite but I have this desire to. People think I'm crazy because I want to try new things. However, I would not go guns fully loaded and pile the stuff on a cracker or whatever. I'd be cautious about it at the very least.

Any suggestions on one would spend his first Vegemite experience?

I would recommend toast with Vegemite and cheese, with or without butter. I prefer without.

Vegemite kicks ass. Granted, it's an acquired taste... You pretty much need to have been eating it since birth to like it as an adult.

I don't dislike vegemite, but it pales in comparison to marmite. I'm one of those people who layer marmite thickly and then get dissaproving looks from people who either don't like it or can't tolerate more than a thin layer.

First time I had Vegemite I really disliked it, and I still hate it. I hate the smell, even. It's just so painfully bitter and salty and... Eurgh! Puts me on edge.

Rather un-Australian of me, but it's so intolerable.

Promite tastes like somebody rubbed Vegemite in dirt =D
