Why must I choose?

Ok, so I'm playing through Mass Effect 1 (again), and I'm at Virmire. Now, my first playthrough I didn't really interact with my crew. This time 'round, I talked to them after the important missions. The problem now is that I feel a lot of sympathy for both
Ashley and Kaidan
Now I must choose who will die, and I just don't want to. I am contemplating creating divergent saves before I have to choose and just finishing the game with one, then the other, but I don't think ME2 will recognize that. This is also the save I'm getting to level 60 on, so I want to get all the bonuses on all my ME2 imports. So now I am venting here.

Well, Kaiden is as dull as dishwater, so it wasn't exactly a hard choice for me. Although Faye Shepard had to sleep with someone, and since Aiden Shepard got the Asari in the first playthrough, she got stuck for Boring McBoring Face.

Then Batman Garrus was a romance option in 2. She was a happy bunny that day.

The thing is it would be awesome if Rahna somehow featured in ME3, which would make Kaidan useful, and his story made me sympathetic. If she doesn't, then that is untapped potential. Also, I like how Kaidan is level headed about everything. Ashley's aversion to aliens made me sadface and want to yell at her.
