Why No Love for Love Threads?

With Valentine's Day approaching, I wanted to see if we could have a legitimate heart-to-heart (pardon my lame attempt at a pun) about why many of the posters on this board are so adamantly opposed to discussions of romance, love, and (most especially) heartache. I don't mean to troll, and obviously I'm sure any of us here could easily tell a few sad tales, but what's the big deal?

I know that there are going to be people whose response is that it's boring, or everything has been said about all of these subjects, but that doesn't seem complete. Yes, almost every permutation of love and loss has been played out hundreds of times, but that doesn't make it any less important to the person going through it. And, yes, there's probably oodles and oodles of existing advice not only here but on the internet at large, but if you had a concern wouldn't you rather have someone respond directly to you (one human to another) rather than going through people's advice to other people?

Are we really so jaded that we can't summon up the humanity to either post (at least) "sorry, man, that sucks", or simply shut the hell up, and not read the threads? Maybe we should have a specific section of the site for "romance" (though relegating all of them to a single thread would make it a bit impersonal and cruel), but to go into threads where someone is pouring his or her heart out (for good or ill) and telling them that you don't care, or that they're somehow "wrong" for posting, that's just mean.

So, maybe I'm missing something, but that's my take. If the community at large disagrees, I'm more than willing to hear alternate views.

Because the majority of us are jaded, loveless beings who fail to even comprehend the basic concept...

Then some of us are currently in love with a person who loves them back, but currently seems to think it worthwhiel to ignore that in favour of being with some guy who doesn't even live in the same town, and she's only known a week, whereas we've known eachother (and been in love) for two years, some of us don't get to "celebrate" valentines day even when we love someone, maybe that'll explain why some of us aren't willing to discuss it...

...

It's probably because no one likes soppy bollocks clogging up their inter-webs...

[edit]: noticed the mention of teen angst, thought i'd mention i'm turning 21 soon, so no angst of the teen variety here... Just regular angst.

One starts, then there's 10, pretty soon they start to be more than half of the Off-Topic forum.

I believe that it isn't actually the inherent dislike of love and heartache. I believe that the problem lies in that every 15 year-old with a girl problem makes a thread asking for help on "what to do now?"

The problem isn't with the topic of love necessarily, it with the excess of threads dripping with teen angst so profusely that if you put a bucket under them you'd have enough extra angst to start an army of emo bands.

While its nice to get all the "sorry man, that sucks" from everyone, I'm sorry, its teen angst. You get over it eventually. Teen angst threads, to me, don't start any interesting discussion. Its why I don't post in them and generally ignore them.

There's my opinion on why people generally dislike them.

Im actually celebrating that day by killing things with my girl and shotgun. Escapists to tend to hate love and the like for various reasons. I just hate it because i don't believe in love.

Because everyone who's failed at love doesn't like to hear about people who have succeeded where we've failed repeatedly.

You deserve to be clouted about the head for that statement. I rather like the day, as it has a good bit of poetic romance to it by its classic concept.

Anywho, I've seen that it's less romance that ticks people off, and more shallow musings on who looks hotter that suffers the lash of Escapians everywhere. I certainly have no problem with a good romantic discussion. With the other more personally-oriented threads (I feel such-and-such a way, what should I do for this relationship, etc.), I've seen most people being kind-hearted and supportive, with very few others talking against it (Namely Gen Hellspawn, but he's not supportive of much else, either).

Then again, I could be seeing only what I want to see, being the romantic that I am.

i may deserve to be bludgeoned about the head, but i would still have more sense than the numbskulls that actually acknowledge this retarded holiday.

Acknowledge it in its current chocolate and jewelry rush form? Yes.

Acknowledge it on a deeper level and don't pay much attention to its current conventions, instead using it as an excuse to spend a lot of time with someone you particularly enjoy? No. Not by a long shot.

In fairness, speaking as a no-longer teen, the angst doesn't cease, or even change. But, your stance is defensible. You don't like the threads, so you don't deal with them. What confuses me are the people who actively dislike the entire genre of threads, yet post in them nonetheless.

I just hate it because it's another day that symbolises and mocks my singleness and my inability to ask out the girl of my dreams because I'm worried she wants to 'just stay friends' (as always...).

Because most of them are angsty, and no one likes angst (with the exception of various anime fangirls, they can't seem to get enough of the stuff).

Valentines day should be more about friendship and loyalty than bf/gf love.

Valentine went to the colloseam to save his friends and fellow christians from being torn apart for Roman amusement

I should eventually stop posting in my own thread, but come on. Most of us have probably played at least one wangst filled game. I mean, even Gears of War 2 was filled with angst up to the ears half of the time. Now, you can say that the difference is that if something "really" bad happens, someone's allowed to be emotional, but that's just a matter of scale, isn't it?

I'm not sure where you're getting that from, but that wasn't Valentine.

"He was arrested and imprisoned upon being caught marrying Christian couples and otherwise aiding Christians who were at the time being persecuted by Claudius in Rome. Helping Christians at this time was considered a crime. Claudius took a liking to this prisoner -- until Valentinus tried to convert the Emperor -- whereupon this priest was condemned to death. He was beaten with clubs and stoned; when that didn't finish him, he was beheaded outside the Flaminian Gate. Various dates are given for the martyrdom or martyrdoms" - Wikipedia.

Honestly, I just don't care. I don't come to the internet to hear about how random people I don't know are interacting. I have real life for that. I just avoid those threads when i see them though.

Yep, I reckon most of the people that have a problem with romantic discussions are lonely singletons such as myself, who are ultimately frustrated by people complaining of how their relationship isn't going entirely swimmingly. This makes the lonely singleton in question want to strangle something and shout to the world "Don't you realise how fucking lucky you are?". That's the way I see it anyway.

Oh, and about the holiday sucking I quite agree - at its basis it's a religious festival for a saint who is only known for being gruesomely murdered for being a christian, and has evolved to become a reason for card, chocolate and flower businesses to squeeze money out of an unsuspecting public in the post-christmas lull by making them feel obliged to materialistically display their love for one another, thus cheapening every other day on the calendar. Are we such a media- and consumer-driven society that we need to be told when to be romantic? It seems so.

You on a gaming forum and asking why none of us love a day devoted to couples, being sterotypical we can safetly say that the majority of the posters on this forum are single and therefore arent going to find a couples day all that exciting.

I personally like valentines day when i'm actually in a relationship and when i'm not i just let it go past without event.
