I always thought that if I could, Growlith would be my side kick.

No as Iconic as Pikachu though.
Maybe it's the red cheeks?
I LOVE THAT POKEMON!!!
what I hate though is that I always somehow end up getting the version that has vulpix as an exclusive instead of that(silver, ruby, leafgreen and Diamond)

Allso fire is overdone as the main character!

Hes likable, hes cute, hes identifable!

But most importantly hes the underdog!

It's because Pikachu appeals to everyone. It's brightly coloured, easy to spot and is cute and cuddly, and it shoots frickin lightning. Looking a tother Pokémon, it's even smaller and can be seen as the underdog, whom everyone roots for really. What's not to love?

he has a point!
A very good, as well as cute and cuddly, point.

A question I have been asking since I first saw the show. Why Pikachu? If he was their mascot why make him #25? So many questions.

Probably because it's role in the anime is Ash's sidekick
And the question of the thread is why that is.

So... Well, not really a helpful answer.

OT: I guess they wanted a pokemon that wasn't super-rare, but still a bit rare, and that wouldn't evolve. Then of course, because the starter pokemons from the original Pokemon were Fire, Water and Grass, they needed another element for Yellow. Something quite different from those three. Rock was too boring, and there wasn't any cute cuddly pokemons that didn't evolve in that group anyway, so Electricity was really the best option.
Didn't evolve? What do you think Raichu is?
A stone evolution, not an evolution by level.
I would question that. I had my Pikachu in my Red version evolve on by leveling up. A glitch, yes, but it DOES happen.

To me...once...

I have no idea, why not ask the guys behind the initial ideas for the Anime, that's where most of pikachu's popularity stems from.

My theory, is that they didn't want to use one of the three starter pokemon in the anime if they were only going to follow one trainer. They then decided to go for another elemental type that would likely fit in with the typical water/grass/fire trio, and the electric type made the most sense in that regard. Though apart from that, what electric type would be iconic easy to market and not overpowered in regards to the pokemon stats. Pikachu fits the bill at that point. But this is just my musing.

At the start it was only 150, so mew wasn't an option, then with the film they explained why mewtwo is called mewtwo.

I don't understand why he wasn't the first pokemon you got lumped with in the games, I was expecting the game to start exactly the same as the programme did.

I also don't understand why he isn't number one, they could have ordered it to be Pikachu #1 Raichu #2 bulbersaur #3 etc.

Lastly, I am not 100% on this but why did he never evolve in the programme? He got a charmander to charizard sooner and he used pikachu atleast once per episode, he used charmander once every 25 odd programmes.

To answer your question though, I have no idea. Maybe they held a vote and pikachu was voted as the favorite.

He might have been cute then but look at my avatar, he's a sorry sight now. Always a slippery slope after a quick rise in fame.

Pikachu wasn't a mascot until the anime, where it was given the role as Ask's starter pokemon because they didn't want to favour any of the in-game starters. Not taking sides, so to speak.

I've often read in pokemon trivia sections that Jigglypuff was optioned to be Ash's starter pokemon, but it's pretty obvious why they changed their minds.

Pikachu isn't part of a 'set' (ie, the starters, or Growlithe/Vulpix Ekans/Sandshrew between versions) so it really doesn't have a competition equivalent, perfect for a cute, eye-catching mascot. I really prefer Raichu's design, though. Raichu has more style.

Because he gives kids seizures.... at least I think it was him...

Anyway I always though Charizard should have been the mascot (he was for a time I guess).

I'd be all over Growlithe as my sidekick.

But Pikachu could surf back in Yellow so there is that...
