It has the most personality?

I dont know, maybe something to do with it was the underdog (like someone may have already metioned here today) and they didnt want to favor any of the three elemental pokemon (Or something), so pikachu was like the one that was the least favorable.

Off topic: What is with all the recent Pokemon love recently? Dont get me wrong, it is bringing back strong nostalgic memories and I am trying to find the series. God I loved that show.

P.S. If you own Pokemon Yellow HOW did you people beat the first gym leader with pickachu(and maybe a bug/normal pokemon too)
From what I remember I would just get a butterfree and "confusion" the guy to death.

OT: I don't really know why Pikachu...it is kind of cute I guess.

I know throughout Yellow you would eventually get Bulbasaur, Charmander, AND Squirtle throughout the story. I THINK you got Bulbasaur on the way to Pewter City. Otherwise, you just had to train other pokemon up to be a match for Geodude and Onyx

It's because Pikachu appeals to everyone. It's brightly coloured, easy to spot and is cute and cuddly, and it shoots frickin lightning. Looking a tother Pokémon, it's even smaller and can be seen as the underdog, whom everyone roots for really. What's not to love?

But he can't spew fire and doesn't have cannons at all!

As I remember I traded in Pokémon from Red (and then got seriously screwed later on when they stopped listening to me because they were at "too high" a level).

I don't know why they picked it. I like Pikachu but I could certainly see other Pokemon being the mascot.

Probably because he (it?) is so average. If Ash got an awesome, kick all your asses pokemon right form the start it wouldn't be very interesting would it.

Look objectively at Transformers. Their most identified Transformers are yellow. Bumblebee and Hot Shot. Pikachu is yellow and therefore the mascot.

Initially both Pikachu and the Pokemon Clefairy were chosen to be lead characters for the franchise merchandising, with the latter as the primary mascot to make the early comic book series more "engaging". However with the production of the animated series, Pikachu was chosen as the sole flagship Pokemon, in an attempt to appeal to female viewers and their mothers, and under the belief that the creature presented the image of a recognizable intimate pet for children. Its color was also a deciding factor, as yellow is a primary color and thus considered easier for children to recognize from a distance, and with consideration to the fact the only other competing yellow mascot at the time was Winnie-the-Pooh.

Oh, why hello there wikipedia.

It's cute, you can get it early on, but it's not too common. It's in walking distance of Ash/Red's hometown. Enough reasons?

Probably because it's role in the anime is Ash's sidekick
And the question of the thread is why that is.

So... Well, not really a helpful answer.

OT: I guess they wanted a pokemon that wasn't super-rare, but still a bit rare, and that wouldn't evolve. Then of course, because the starter pokemons from the original Pokemon were Fire, Water and Grass, they needed another element for Yellow. Something quite different from those three. Rock was too boring, and there wasn't any cute cuddly pokemons that didn't evolve in that group anyway, so Electricity was really the best option.
Didn't evolve? What do you think Raichu is?
A stone evolution, not an evolution by level.
I would question that. I had my Pikachu in my Red version evolve on by leveling up. A glitch, yes, but it DOES happen.

To me...once...
Pics or it didn't happened.

...

The only evidence I have to this is testimony from my sister who was sitting near me and either playing Crystal or Yellow at the time. There is, however, this [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yC-ProNGfeA] crappy video of someone else experience with the Pikachu evolution glitch. If you don't want to sit through it all, skip to 2:26. That's the transition from battle to evolution screen.
