Rascism.
That is all.
Ok, killing poor peasant farmers in Vietnam doesn't feel too righteous (unless backed up by the aforementioned super power) so the Vietcong or even the North Vietnamese Army is out of the question

The Taliban are an embarrassing chapter in US history, one where we gave a radical fringe group massive stockpiles of military weaponry and trained their leaders in US tactics, right before they used those weapons and tactics to orchestrate a crippling attack and then engage us in a conflict with no foreseeable end. Having an in-depth look at them in a game would only underline how incompetent we are.

China is a very real threat, so antagonizing them would be like insulting an eight foot tall kid at school with a beard named Mungo while he has you trapped in a very small room while you are in traction.

N. Korea is a close ally of China, so see the above entry.

Iran is scary to say the least. They don't have a strong army to match up against to antagonize them with, and having a campaign focused on sabotaging their nuclear program would confirm their hatred of America. Not safe enough for any current studio to exploit.

Pre-Op. Iraqi Freedom Iraq has been tried, but scrapped due to the fact that veterans are still around so its still a sore subject, and the whole conflict is hard to turn into an adrenaline fest due to the relative inactivity of it.

Russia was a superpower that fell due to its own economic blunders, shitty leaders and general incompetence. They cannot respond to American taunts anymore, so they are an even safer subject than Nazi Germany. And the propaganda pumped into American youth ever since 1947 hasn't faded, so companies are looking to capitalize on those planted triggers. Arguably the greatest attack Russia has ever made on America is that now politicians that give handjobs to big business now don't even have to work to find a bullshit argument against legislation trying to stop exploitation of the sick and dying.

The hate against Russia is partly because companies figured out that we all have mental triggers in our subconscious that will make us shut off our minds when we hear the word "communism" and transform to a state of hyperactive twat-ery. Obviously as well, its the last time that America went up against an enemy that could stand up on its own.

As a Russian I'm sick of it. The irony here is that USA is the only country actually guilty of horrid war crimes (Vietnam, Iraq anyone?)
If we even talked about Russia's horrible war crimes, too, such as back in WW2, then it'd make America's past look like a huggable bear. Why are you so offended, because your country is always in our games? You should be honored to have the idea that in Modern Warfare your country was kicking our butt until a nuke's EMP stopped the invasion before we would be overrun, yet here you are trying to cry that it's wrong and then bring in our past as if it mattered? Seriously...

As for the thread, it's because Russia was America's last truly memorable standoff between an equal power. Until we have another war in some other country with nearly equal power matching our military, it'll probably be them. Besides, who doesn't love what the crazy Russians make in games like Red Alert with their time travel and assassinating Einstein and crap? It's just awesome.

Lastly: Russian accents on a muscular Russian? Win. Always has, always will.

Ever heard of the Cold War? And that they're awesome. And you can pretty much blame the whole thing on Red Dawn and Goldeneye.

Making Russia the bad guy sidesteps any accusation of racism (they're white) or religious intolerance.

Also they have the second best villain accents, after Germany.
This. Except Russian accepts are way cooler then German.

I think because, in the real world, Russia is the only equal to America's immence military power.
P.S: maybe China. But then the game company will get sued for being "racist".

Black Ops, you say? Might it have something to do with the fact that it revolves around the Cold War?

Also, there are way too many conspiracy theories in this thread.

Is that supposed to be some kind of coded message? Is there something that the KGB doesn't want you to tell us?

You want to know what is really stupid about what you just said, the people who complain against the aliens are generally not the people who complain about the Nazi. What you're doing is grouping everyone who has had a complaint about an enemy in a certain game together with people who have had complaints of the enemies in other games, what your doing there is inane, and your writing is barley legible too I might add.

P.S. Complaining on the internet about others complaining on the internet is a tad bit contradictory don't you agree?

Google translate, huh?

I would try to fix that, but I'm sort of lazy. But, really, that last word is incorrect.
It says because Russia is Awesome, and it is, so stop with your constant intolerance towards the Russian culture and we'll stop making fun of your stupid accents and disgusting food
Sorry, but what is this about?

First of all, it doesn't say "because Russia is awesome". It says "because Russia is unique". And the tense is incorrect.

And what intolerance are you talking about? It's fairly hard for me to be intolerant of Russian culture, being Russian and living in Russia myself.

Because fighting anyone other than us would somehow be racist, and we don't give as much shit about the subject. Usually, anyways.

I honestly have no problem with the Russians being antagonists, but only if they're done right. The problem with most of these games is a lot of the time the Russians are just bastards for no real reason. Case in point: In Modern Warfare, at least we got a little bit of the Communists' ideology: they think that their leaders whored their country out to the United States, and want both to pay as a result. Decent enough logic. Now look at Modern Warfare 2: Somehow, magically, a terrorist leader has become a national hero, and the entire country is now willing to commit a horrible, expensive and possibly suicidal war with the United States. The question is why. Sure, apparently a CIA agent was caught in a terrorist act, but you're seriously telling me that the airport cameras didn't pick up Makarov's face or anything? That's never really explained, and that's the problem. They ignore all the reasons why the Russians WOULDN'T go to war over something this stupid. I don't care who the antagonist is, I just want decent reasons behind why they're villains.
To be fair: The Americans rarely go to war for good reasons. They go to war for power and to screw up smaller/expanding countries... well those might be good reasons but they always misjustifie them.
So I don't see why the Russians can't simply do it unprovoked.

Whats the deal with games like MW2,BFBC2, and Black ops having Russians as the antagonists? Have game writers really run out of ideas?
The World Wars, Korea, and Vietnam each defined a generation, but the Cold War actually encompassed all those conflicts (excluding WWI), and much of it was in dealing with the Soviet Union, predominantly Russian (just look at a USSR map).

Not saying it's right, and that "certain parties" should move past that codex of identification, but that sort of long-lived reputation is going to be very hard to shake.

....and I'm sure I just came off sounding like an idiot.

Well in the case of Modern Warfare 2, they go into a full, intercontinental war over a false pretense. I don't care if you're American, Russian, or bloody Samoan, no one just decides to randomly go into a massive world war that can easily turn thermonuclear without getting their facts straight (case in point: events like the Cuban Missile Crisis and the NATO Operation Able Archer, both cases where both sides got very nervous but ANALYZED the problem rather then just going to war over it). The fact is that when you're in a game you need a decent story reason as to why something happens. The excuse most games with the Russians as antagonists go with is basically 'they're just evil, ok?' Regardless of whether in reality wars can occur unprovoked, in your game you have to tell a decent reason why or else your entire concept is just a massive plot hole.
