Why?
Why not?
They could just as well have chosen Belgium, but what kind of effect would that give, you think?
It might be more successful to use a plot were Hitler escaped along with some of his followers, including scientists, had his body and that of some of his loyal followers rebuilt as cyborgs and start World War 3 with a robot army. But that wouldn't be realistic enough.

EDIT: You know how obsessed they are with realism these days...

Because they were equal enemies with the americans. Kicking the vietnamese in the face then slowly dying off from booby traps is not very glorious.

And what intolerance are you talking about? It's fairly hard for me to be intolerant of Russian culture, being Russian and living in Russia myself.
Ok first of all i was not speaking to you directly i was talking about all of the dumbass redneck who live in my town and mock my culture, secondly, that is a fairly accurate traslation and even though the tense is incorrect the words for awesome and unique are often used as synonyms in the russian language, its like the differnce between glorious and magnificent in english. BTW you speak very accurate english where did you learn it?
I was taught to speak English at school and we had a very good English teacher.[/quote]

Lucky, ide be trilingual right now if our spanish teacher had half a brain. But yea my parents and grandparents spoke to me in Russian since i was a little kid so i guess it kinda came naturally, but i digress, it does kinda piss me off that Russia is always used as the villain, ide just like to c some depth in it u know like maybe more of a clash of ideologies being put aside to battle an even greater threat, like WW2 again but with Aliens or Zombies

Because Russians were the last enemies that America fought which were on the same technological level as the US, and which were perceived as an actual threat.

I mean, what have we had since the Cold War? A bunch of terrorists, in ass backward countries using 60 year old weapons, and home made explosives. Sure, they can kill people, but there is not threat of them ever being a serious threat to the American government.
this.

thank you, sir.

And the fact that most people seem to start complaining when you decide to include anything more recent than that. (Medal of Honour Taliban controversy anyone?)
Ha very good point. The Russians are a safe bad guy in most western countries, which really really bugs a russian guy I know(doesnt stop him buying the games though). What the naughty people are doing nowadays is 'waaay too baaaad' to put into video games.

Playing a game as a terrorist you'd spend your time hitting civilian targets, then dealing with the police and security forces afterwards. The media would have a field day with it.

Yeah!! Leave the Russians alone! Go pick on Sri Lankans or Kenyans or Slovenians or the Greeks. FUCK THE GREEKS!

Seriously? There has to be an enemy in a game. Russia is important. Nobody would give two shits if we were fighting some third world country (outside of the middle east), and nobody would give two shits about fighting some random insignificant country.

To answer your question, yes, game writers have TOTALLY RUN OUT OF IDEAS. You will never ever see another fun, innovative game in your entire life. The best thing for you to do is piss and moan about the similarity of current games and then quit playing them.

Shit, I long for the 1980s again, when nobody was all like "Aw man, it's just another Mario clone. All you do is run to the right of the screen and jump on things." Seriously, 90% of the games back then were knock-offs and a shitload of them did really well. I'm not saying that I'm not sick of seeing *insert random race/ethnicity/nationality* in every game, but it's not worth getting worked up about because it will pass. Soon we'll have some awful string of games about killing North Koreans or something.

Whats the deal with games like MW2,BFBC2, and Black ops having Russians as the antagonists? Have game writers really run out of ideas?
I agree with MW2 it was a bit tenuous, but it's fair game in Black Ops. Because it's the cold war. The one fought against Russia. It's just like saying: "Why do we always kill Nazis in WW2 games?"

Well, some would say that Russia is still a threat to the rest of the Western world. But yeah, game writers have lost all creativity when it comes to writing plots for games, at least for COD

I perfer prefer playing as russia on BC2. So much cooler than those pansy americans, that's for sure.

Anyway, yeah, but what other nation would you take instead? That would make sense? I'd rather see a third party fighting russian and/or the US. That'd be cool.
That was Germany in the 1940's. And they kinda got fucked by the Allies after both wars, so they really can't be that third party thanks to restrictions.

It's actually pretty simple. Right now, Russia is one of the only countries that has a military that could compete with the U.S. Add decades of tension into the mix, and you have the best antagonist since Hitler.
