Am I missing something, or is Steve Jobs just being presented as even more of an uptight asshole than people thought he was?

I never understood the Apple fandom though, Scientology seems more reputable in comparison. At least they don't brainwash you...and you should all join the Cult and give your money to XENU!...because that would be illegal.
Well, the thing was that Stever Jobs and Bill Gates pretty much invented the modern PC and most of the electronic infrastructure we see today. They pretty much started out working out of a basement, and managed to churn out the first apple computer, even getting them into almost every school in the US. There was a famous falling out between the two. They even did a movie about it called "Pirates Of Silicon Valley" back in the day.

It's like asking why Nikola Tesla, or Thomas Edison have followings, it just seems odder that these guys have followings because they are still alive, though it can be argued that they were similarly influential, and Apple was the original company.

While Steve was arguably just as big a jerk, the bottom line is that when they had their falling out Bill took his operating system into the big leagues and formed "Microsoft" which was a huge, ruthless, corperate empire while Apple was nearly dead. It was easy to cast Steve in the role of the wronged little guy and see Apple's survival as sort of heroic for a long time. In more recent years with Apple getting bigger, and bigger, and people being more critical of Steve as he became more well known, it's harder for people to see why Apple ever had fans, especially for the younger generation who were never around during the falling out, and have never used a DOS based computer never mind an Apple 2, or followed things from those days.

In reality the bottom line seems to be that both Bill and Steve were arrogant, eccentric geniuses within their field, who liked to screw anyone they could get a leg up on. Whether Steve was always that way (and shielded by Bill becoming a more obvious target), or became that way, is probably going to be a matter of debate for a lot of people for many years.

At any rate, I'm just explaining why the fandom exists (or trying to). I can understand how some people might think it's crazy as Scientology if they haven't grown up with this stuff. Being 36, I pretty much came up with the first personal computers, and was able to follow some of the stuff going on as a kid while it was happening.

I respect Job's for what he accomplished even if I don't like the guy, and I looked at those links you provided, and they seemed very subjective, in that I would never change my view the way they did, and again tablets can do these jobs just as well, and I'd still argue that the ipad is only a gimmick.

On another topic, one of the most horrible things you can do is to ignore others, when you look at other people's works, ideas and feedback, you get inspired to create great works, or post a very interesting paragraph up there. If you have a vision of what something should be, more power to you, but that doesn't mean it can't ever be improved, or you can't create something new out of it based on ideas of others.

Breaking news: rich people like to waste money to feel better about themselves. More at 11.

Go to the D.M.V. and spend less than 50 bucks on a new plate or have a system set-up to buy a new car every 6 months(With added bonus of Handicap parking.)... The man was a genius.

Edit: Whoops, totally quoted the wrong person. Meant to grab:

Didn't you know? Owning an Apple product and waxing philosophic about how much better it makes you automatically makes you a better person than everyone else. It's a proven fact.

I have a general dislike for his products and the policies surrounding them, but honestly, I feel like I might have been able to get along with him were he still alive and I ever had the chance to meet him.

EDIT for clarification: I don't mean that I like to be a dick, I just mean that I like being a smartass, there is a slight difference.

Actually, there probably isn't a difference. Oh well.

I really enjoyed this. It's that "because-wouldn't-that-be-interesting" attitude.

I may not be a big fan of the products or corporate attitude, but I'm always amused by the way this man's mind works.

Fun Times.

Also, is the picture pre or post cancer? That might be the reason for the handicap.
